Based in our Katanning office and reporting to the Editor (Great Southern), this is a unique and exciting prospect for an enthusiastic journalist to join The West Australian’s Great Southern team.
You will be the primary reporter for the Great Southern Herald and Narrogin Observer, weekly publications serving the communities of the Great Southern and Wheatbelt and are among the four mastheads that make up SWM’s Great Southern regional newspapers. In this role, you will be responsible for delivering original news stories for print and online publication that reflect the wider interests of the people of the Great Southern and Wheatbelt. As the papers primary reporter, you’ll cover all aspects of news in those rural communities, including courts, crime, council, agriculture, health, arts and culture, politics, special features, community, and sport.
Reporting to the Editor (Great Southern), your key responsibilities will include: Key Responsibilities - Consistently delivering accurate, engaging copy to strict deadlines
- Covering breaking news stories across a broad range of areas
- Pitching agenda-setting exclusive story ideas to the Editor
- Building and maintaining excellent contacts across the community
- Interviewing and photographing subjects confidently and professionally
- Representing the company in a qualified and courteous manner What you will bring to the role - Admirable written and verbal communication
- Highly organised with the ability to build rapport quickly with a range of stakeholders
- A passion for community journalism, strong work ethic and self-motivation
- Experience writing copy in a professional or academic context
- Have an eagle-eye for detail and excellent writing skills
- Excellent time management with the ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
- Be a proud representative for the Narrogin Observer to develop the paper’s standing in the community
