Company Description Pichi Richi Railway Preservation Society Inc. operates a heritage railway between Quorn and Port Augusta in South Australia on part of the original Ghan line. Established in 1973, the Society is run entirely by volunteers who manage operations, maintenance, and visitor services. Services include steam and diesel train journeys between March and November, with restoration and maintenance activities continuing throughout the year.
The Society was awarded Silver in the 2023 South Australian Tourism Awards, reflecting its strong reputation as a tourism destination. Team members contribute directly to preserving railway history while supporting a respected community-based organization.
Role Description We are seeking seeking a skilled and motivated Rolling Stock Maintainer to help preserve and maintain one of Australia's most significant heritage railway fleets. This hands-on role is responsible for the maintenance, repair, overhaul and restoration of steam and diesel locomotives, passenger carriages, freight wagons, railcars and associated workshop equipment. Reporting to the Operations Manager, you will:
Undertake preventive and corrective maintenance on rolling stock and mechanical equipment
Diagnose faults and carry out repairs to keep assets operating safely and reliably
Assist with restoration and overhaul projects
Fabricate or modify components where original parts are unavailable
Maintain maintenance records and inspection documentation
Provide guidance to trades assistants and work alongside volunteers
Assist with emergency maintenance activities when required Essential Requirements
Mechanical trade qualification (Cert III or higher)
Demonstrated mechanical maintenance experience
Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings
Robust problem-solving and communication skills
Current South Australian Driver's Licence
Ability to work independently and as part of a team Desirable Experience
Heritage railway, transport or heavy industry maintenance
Fabrication, machining or welding skills
Diesel locomotive, hydraulic or air brake system experience
