National Indigenous Times is seeking an experienced Senior Journalist to join our Kimberley bureau, based in Broome.
The Kimberley is a region that continues to shape national conversations, and this role is about ensuring those stories are told by a journalist who is embedded in the community.
You will report on breaking news, community issues, major events and in-depth stories across the Kimberley, building strong relationships with Aboriginal organisations, land councils, native title bodies, community leaders and key stakeholders throughout the region.
Key responsibilities
- Report and file a minimum of 12 stories per week across digital platforms
- Contribute regularly to the print edition of National Indigenous Times and, when required, Indigenous Business Review
- Cover breaking news, court matters, council meetings, community events and major regional issues
- Produce in-depth features, community profiles and investigative journalism
- Travel throughout the Kimberley, including Derby, Fitzroy Crossing, Halls Creek, Kununurra and surrounding communities
- Capture photography and short-form video content to accompany stories
- Publish stories through our content management system and collaborate with the social media team on promotion
- Mentor cadets and junior journalists as directed by the Editor
About you
- Demonstrated journalism and reporting experience
- Robust editorial judgement and the ability to work to daily deadlines
- A commitment to ethical, culturally respectful reporting that centres Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices
- The ability to work independently while based in a regional bureau
- A willingness to travel regularly, including to remote communities
- Experience producing multimedia content including photography and video is desirable
- Salary negotiable based on experience
