Job Summary

Operates a backhoe, street sweeper, roller, and mowing tractors. Drives vehicles or light equipment to work sites. Performs routine maintenance on equipment including lubricating, fueling, cleaning, checking fluid levels, and tire air pressure before operating each day. Records usage and maintenance details on required forms and reports any excessive wear or damage to the supervisor of the city garage. Cleans equipment as scheduled and performs other duties assigned by the supervisor or department head.

Essential Job Functions

- Operate city‑owned or leased light equipment such as backhoes, mowing tractors, trenchers, and dump trucks up to 8 hours per day to move/load dirt/brush, cut grade, clear city property, and excavate material in challenging terrain.
- Perform routine maintenance: scheduled lubricating of grease fittings, checking oil, fuel, and water levels, filling to required operational levels, and cleaning the machine after daily use.
- Be on call for nights, weekends, holidays, inclement weather, and emergency situations.
- Perform related street repairs using land plats, maps, and diagrams.
- Assign work duties to crew members for excavations, backfilling trenches and culverts.
- Communicate and supervise workers in routine operations and maintenance.
- Report job or project status to the supervisor.
- Maintain positive relations with other crews and management.
- Mow city properties as directed, paint fire hydrants, supervise and assist crew in policing work areas.
- Practice valuable housekeeping, place safety barriers, remove roots and debris, assist in repairing damaged streets.
- Service, adjust, and make minor repairs to tools, equipment, machines, and attachments.
- Keep and complete daily records on proper forms for each machine used or operated.
- Sharpen cutting edges on auger points as needed.
- Check equipment for excessive wear, broken parts,



or necessary maintenance; report immediately to the supervisor of the city maintenance garage.
- Perform all job functions with attention to safety of workers, buildings, power lines, buried lines, and city policies and procedures.
- Perform manual labor when not operating heavy equipment and other duties assigned by the supervisor.

Education Requirements

High school diploma or GED preferred. Two years of experience operating light equipment with streets and storm drainage construction practices.

Employment Requirements

- Subject to a complete background investigation.
- Must take and pass drug, physical, and pre‑placement screenings administered by the City of Mission doctors at the City’s expense.
- Must possess a current valid class "B" driver’s license issued by the Department of Public Safety with no moving violations in the past two years.

- Read and interpret documents such as safety rules and city policy procedures.
