Position Description – Senior SMSF Accountant
About the role
The primary responsibility is to act as the primary, high-level point of contact for a portfolio of Self-Managed Superannuation Fund clients.
The role requires and combines deep technical compliance knowledge with proactive relationship management, focusing on strategy advice, and client retention rather than daily processing.
Intrinsically, you will proactively manage a portfolio of clients covering financial planning and accounting firms. You will do this by building strong relationships with your clients and ensure they receive the necessary services to deliver on their needs. Critical to this will be your ability to deepen your client relationships by owning and responding to their needs.
You will be responsible for ensuring funds are job ready for the offshore processing team to commence and control the flow of work through to fund completions in a timely manner.
Key Accountabilities
Fund Accounting
- 1. Compliance and Regulatory Management
- Audit Facilitation: Acting as the main contact for independent auditors, managing the documentation flow, and resolving audit queries to ensure timely completion of the annual audit.
- ATO Compliance: Monitoring and managing deadlines for the lodgement of the SMSF Annual Return (SAR), Business Activity Statements (BAS), and Instalment Activity Statements (IAS).
- TBAR Reporting: Ensuring Transfer Balance Account Reports (TBAR) are prepared and lodged to monitor member cap limits.
- Regulatory Compliance: Informing clients of legislative changes that impact their fund's compliance. Liaising with the ATO, auditors, and external advisers on complex compliance matters, such as pension planning, tax strategies, and fund audits.
2. Financial Reporting and Oversight
- Technical Oversight & Review: Review SMSF financial statements, SMSF Annual Returns and member statements prepared by other onshore fund accountants or offshore teams to ensure accuracy and compliance with SIS and income tax legislation.
- Member Statement Maintenance: Ensuring accurate,
up-to-date records of member balances, including contributions, earnings, and pension payments.
- Query Management: Follow-up of outstanding queries and liaison with client adviser and or support staff to resolve.
- Investment Portfolio Monitoring: Reviewing that asset valuations are updated annually and align with the fund's investment strategy.
3. Client Liaison and Support
- Relationship Management: Acting as the main point of contact for a portfolio of 250–500 SMSF clients depending on complexity. The role includes handling and resolving client enquiries, clarifications, and issues regarding their fund's financial position.
- Trustee Support: Guiding trustees through complex SMSF requirements, such as pension commencement, lump sum withdrawals, and ensuring proper documentation for trustee minutes.
- Strategic Discussions: Participating in discussions regarding fund strategy, such as setting up or winding up a fund.
- Client Engagement: Leverage working knowledge of SMSF administration and technical advice to deepen client relationships.
- Strategic Advisory: Providing proactive advice to trustees on superannuation planning, structure, and legislative changes.
4. Administrative and Operational Duties
- Workflow Management: Maintain oversight of all funds assigned to your portfolio using the in-house project management portal and managing the internal workflow. This includes overseeing deadlines, ensuring efficient delivery of services, and managing the end-to-end lifecycle of the fund.
- Documentation Management: Ensuring all required documents, such as trust deeds and trustee declarations, are properly maintained and accessible.
- Data Integrity:
Collaborating with appointed offshore team to ensure accurate data entry, reconciliation of bank accounts, query management and accuracy.
- Mentorship: Guiding other fund accountants and offshore team members to improve their technical capabilities for consistent, high-quality output.
Other Duties
- Organise for funds to be loaded to the portals and made job ready in preparation for commencement of offshore processing.
- Liaise with client adviser or support staff to outline FY end of year requirements and obtain required documentation.
- Provide comprehensive workpapers and fund profile sheet for each assigned fund.

To be successful for this role- you will require
Experience and Educational Requirements
Educational:
- Degree qualification in Business or Finance related
Previous Industry Experience:
- 5+ years in SMSF administration/accounting industry
- Extensive knowledge of Wealth Management and SMSF market
- A proven track record in team leadership and relationship management
- Proven relationship management skills dealing with key decision makers
- Deep understanding of SMSF industry legislative and compliance regime
