The Mount Isa Water Board (
MIWB
) is seeking a highly capable senior leader to take carriage of a broad and influential portfolio spanning legal, governance, enterprise risk, compliance and commercial matters. Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer and operating as a member of MIWB's Senior Leadership Team, this role provides close access to the Board, Board committees, the Executive Leadership Team and MIWB's bulk water customers.
This is an opportunity to shape core systems and decision-making practices in an essential infrastructure business. The role will lead the continued implementation and embedding of MIWB's ISO *****-aligned Enterprise Risk Management Framework, strengthen positive risk culture, manage key commercial contracts, coordinate legal services and provide clear, practical advice on legal, employment law, governance, compliance, risk and commercial issues.
About the role
Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, this is a senior leadership role with genuine visibility and influence. The role has one direct report, the Senior Governance, Risk & Compliance Advisor, and will suit someone who can operate with credibility at board and executive level while remaining close enough to the detail to get important work done. It requires sound judgement, strong written communication, commercial awareness and the confidence to turn complex issues into clear, usable recommendations.
Key responsibilities
Lead the continued implementation, improvement and embedding of MIWB's ISO *****-aligned Enterprise Risk Management Framework.
Develop and promote a constructive, practical and positive risk culture across the organisation.
Lead, support and develop the Senior Governance,
Risk & Compliance Advisor as the role's direct report.
Provide clear, practical and defensible advice to the Chief Executive Officer, Senior Leadership Team, Executive Leadership Team and Board on legal, governance, regulatory, compliance, risk and commercial matters.
Manage key commercial contracts, including negotiation, development, interpretation, administration, performance management and related risk issues.
Coordinate and manage internal and outsourced legal services to ensure advice is timely, fit for purpose and commercially useful.
Support strong board and committee governance through clear reporting, policy development and advice on decision-making obligations, including oversight of the annual report, corporate reporting, performance planning and the annual strategic refresh.
Contribute to major projects, procurement, negotiations, regulatory engagement and organisational change initiatives.
Build effective relationships with internal stakeholders, external advisers, regulators, government representatives and commercial partners.
About you
You will be an astute, practical and values-led qualified who is ready to contribute at senior leadership level. You may come from a legal, governance, risk, compliance, commercial or regulatory background, but you will bring a common set of qualities:
mature judgement, strong integrity, excellent drafting skills, calmness under pressure and the ability to influence outcomes without unnecessary complexity.
What you will bring
High-level communication skills, with the ability to lead across boundaries, consult and collaborate effectively, influence outcomes and bring people together around practical solutions.
Legal qualifications and admission, or substantial senior experience in legal, governance, commercial, compliance, regulatory or enterprise risk roles.
Strong understanding of enterprise risk management, preferably including ISO *****-aligned frameworks.
Experience with commercial contracts, procurement, regulatory obligations, compliance systems, governance processes, corporate reporting, performance planning and strategic planning cycles.
Excellent judgement, high-quality written communication and the ability to provide clear, balanced and defensible recommendations.
Confidence working with boards, board committees, chief executives, executive teams, external legal advisers and senior stakeholders.
A practical, solutions-focused style, with the confidence to manage competing priorities and work effectively in a lean, high-trust environment.
