Tasmanian Land Conservancy

Tasmania

The Tasmanian Land Conservancy (TLC) is seeking an experienced ecologist and people person to join our team. This is a great prospect to shape how people connect with, support and champion private land conservation in Tasmania, working to create conservation covenants, voluntary stewardship opportunities, and support the purchase and sale of high value conservation land.

About The TLC

The TLC is a for-purpose (not-for-profit), non-political, science and community-based organisation that protects nature on private land in Tasmania. Through science, community, and enduring commitment, we inspire and empower people to conserve nature in Tasmania. We do this for the benefit of current and future generations and for nature itself.

We conserve important habitats and ecosystems by raising funds to buy and manage private land and by working with landholders to protect nature on their land. In a changing world, our work is more important than ever. We hold that nature underpins all life and that our efforts contribute to a future where nature is flourishing, valued and fundamental to Tasmania's character. We believe we achieve more for nature by working with others and by applying the best available science in our decision making.

TLC's strategy is to expand protection and care for nature by integrating conservation models. These include TLC reserves that are owned and managed in perpetuity, land protected by conservation covenants through our Revolving Fund, and by working with landowners to protect the ecological values on their properties through programs including the Midlands Conservation Partnership, Land for Wildlife, Gardens for Wildlife and WildTracker.

In 25 years of operation, TLC has helped to conserve 110,000 hectares throughout Tasmania. Our aim is to extend the land we manage as permanent reserve and other land conserved by an additional 25% by 2030 by continuing to build a community for conservation in Tasmania.

About The Position

The Conservation Programs Ecologist is a hands-on role, both field and office based, responsible for assessing land for conservation values, undertaking vegetation assessments, mapping, researching land to buy and sell through the revolving fund and most importantly engaging with private landholders. You will grow support for conservation on private land across Tasmania through our voluntary programs such as Land for Wildlife or securing the future of private land protection by negotiating conservation covenants. This role works closely with colleagues across the TLC, state and commonwealth government to deliver on TLC’s 2030 Strategic Plan.

What you'll achieve

- Survey and assess ecological values across varied Tasmanian landscapes
- Support recommendations and decision making with mapping (ArcGIS) and reporting
- Facilitate opportunities for landholders to voluntarily and permanently protect land
- Actively engage with the TLC team, broader supporter network

What you'll bring

You are a tertiary-qualified ecologist with a passion for people and conservation purpose. You understand that successful private land conservation requires both heart and science - combining strong relationships with sound ecological evidence to achieve meaningful outcomes.

- at least 3 years’ experience in ecological survey and or assessments
- applied experience using ArcGIS for vegetation mapping
- demonstrated success developing and maintaining relationships, both within a team and with external stakeholders
- confidence and demonstrated success communicating complex matters to varied audiences
- experience managing projects

To give you an edge, you will also have experience in the not-for-profit sector and ecological experience in Tasmania.

The position is offered as an ongoing part-time role (0.8 FTE = 60.8 hours, with regular work hours negotiable), based in Tasmania, ideally from TLC's Hobart office. The TLC provides a flexible work environment where a good work-life balance can be maintained. A remuneration package (pro rata) based on TLC Level 2.3 – 2.6 (Salary Range $90,026 - $100,618, plus statutory superannuation) commensurate with qualifications, skills and experience.
