McArthur is partnering with a Western Sydney council to appoint an experienced Fleet Safety Officer for a full-time temporary assignment.
Based in Western Sydney, this is a specialist operational safety position supporting fleet assets, heavy vehicles, mobile plant, workshops, maintenance activities and associated field operations.
The successful candidate will provide practical and technical WHS advice throughout the complete fleet asset lifecycle, including vehicle specification, procurement, commissioning, operation, maintenance, modification, contractor management, decommissioning and disposal.
The chance
This role will be responsible for strengthening the Council's fleet safety systems and ensuring WHS considerations are embedded into operational and asset-management decisions.
You will work closely with fleet management, workshop personnel, mechanics, drivers, plant operators, procurement teams, contractors and the broader corporate WHS function.
A major focus of the position will be developing practical, task-specific safety documentation that can be effectively implemented by frontline operational employees.
Key responsibilities
Your responsibilities will include:
- Providing specialist WHS advice across fleet, workshop and maintenance operations.
- Developing and maintaining SWMS, Safe Work Procedures, JSAs and task-based risk assessments.
- Local government operations.
- Establishing a structured fleet safety management and documentation framework.
- Conducting operational, plant and equipment risk assessments.
- Supporting safety-in-design reviews for new vehicles, plant and equipment.
- Coordinating safety assurance and commissioning processes for new fleet assets.
- Reviewing workshop traffic management, vehicle movements and pedestrian interaction risks.
- Supporting the safe operation and maintenance of heavy vehicles and mobile plant.
- Developing critical risk controls for high-risk fleet and workshop activities.
- Supporting Chain of Responsibility and heavy vehicle safety obligations.
- Conducting workplace inspections, safety assurance activities and critical-control verification.
- Participating in and leading incident investigations.
- Monitoring corrective actions through to completion.
- Reviewing contractor SWMS, risk assessments, licences and competency requirements.
- Facilitating toolbox talks, consultation sessions and operational risk workshops.
- Supporting training and competency requirements for safety-critical activities.
- Preparing clear reports, safety documentation, procedures and management recommendations.
About you
To be successful, you will possess:
- Tertiary qualifications in Work Health and Safety, occupational health and safety, risk management or a related discipline.
- Demonstrated WHS experience within a complex operational or high-risk environment.
- Practical experience involving fleet, heavy vehicles, mobile plant, workshops, engineering, maintenance, transport,
waste operations or construction.
- Strong experience developing SWMS, Protected Work Procedures, JSAs and risk assessments.
- Experience conducting operational risk assessments and incident investigations.
- Strong knowledge of hazard identification and the hierarchy of controls.
- The ability to engage effectively with frontline operational employees.
- Strong technical writing and documentation skills.
- The ability to translate legislation and technical requirements into practical operational controls.
- Strong stakeholder engagement and influencing skills.
Highly regarded
Experience in any of the following areas will be advantageous:
- Heavy vehicle fleet operations.
- Automotive or mechanical workshops.
- Mobile plant and specialist municipal vehicles.
- Waste collection vehicles or compaction equipment.
- Fleet asset management and vehicle procurement.
- Safety-in-design.
- Chain of Responsibility.
- Electric vehicles or high-voltage vehicle systems.
- Contractor safety management.
- ISO 45001 safety management systems.
- ICAM or equivalent investigation methodologies.
- Mechanical, automotive, electrical, engineering or technical trades.
- Contract period: August 2026 to February 2027 (start date dependent on completion of compliance documents).
- Hours: Full-time, Monday to Friday.
- Work arrangement: Predominantly depot and operational-site based.
- Dress requirements: High-visibility vest, long-sleeved shirt, long work pants and safety footwear.
- Rate: $74 per hour plus Super.
