Compensation

$80,000 – $85,000 annually, based on qualifications

The City of Montpelier is seeking an experienced Senior Accountant to join our Finance team. This position plays a central role in maintaining the city's financial integrity — from managing the annual audit process to overseeing daily accounting operations and ensuring accurate, transparent financial records.

Key responsibilities

Annual audit & fiscal year-endCoordinate and manage the annual audit, including year-end transactions, reconciliations, and schedules.Banking & reconciliationRecord ACH bank transactions and reconcile all bank accounts monthly.Grants & debt trackingTrack all grants, debt, and related expenditures; compile and submit related requisitions.Daily accounting operationsOversee daily accounting functions and ongoing maintenance of the city's financial records.
Qualifications

The successful candidate will bring:

Bachelor's degree in accounting or equivalent experience, with knowledge of Government and/or Fund AccountingExperience in Payroll, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, General Ledger, and general office operationsProficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word, and experience with accounting softwareStrong independent judgment, decision-making skills, and ability to work with the public and outside agenciesExperience with annual municipal audits (preferred)
