At the centre of economic reform in New South Wales, NSW Treasury is the NSW Government's principal financial and economic adviser, supporting informed decision‐making that improves the wellbeing and living standards of the people of Recent South Wales.
NSW Productivity and Equality Commissioner plays a pivotal role in shaping the State's long‐term productivity and living standards agenda.
Reporting to the Deputy Secretary, Economic Strategy and Productivity Group, NSW Treasury, this senior executive position leads independent, evidence‐based analysis and advice to Government on productivity‐enhancing reforms across the economy.
The role is outward‐facing and influential, requiring a deep understanding of the government operating environment and the credibility to engage with Ministers, officials, business, unions and the broader community to build consensus for reform.
Primary purpose of the role
The Commissioner is responsible for identifying opportunities to boost productivity growth across the private and public sectors, with the objective of improving living standards for the people of New South Wales.
The Commissioner also plays an important role in fostering policy debate on ways to lift productivity with external stakeholders, NSW agencies and NSW Government.
In doing so, the Commissioner leads research and analysis, undertakes policy reviews (including reviews requested by Ministers), and provides objective, authoritative and evidence‐based advice to the Government.
A central responsibility of the role is to consider distributional impacts, including intergenerational and spatial effects, and the fairness of policy outcomes.
What you'll do (and why it matters)
Provide strategic and authoritative advice to the Secretary and Treasurer,



supporting the development of an ongoing whole‐of‐government productivity reform agenda.
Lead a program of productivity‐enhancing reforms, informed by high‐quality economic research, data and policy analysis.
Deliver major research and policy reports, including conducting reviews on significant policy issues at the request of Ministers.
Engage with Ministers, Cabinet, agencies and central agencies, contributing to informed decision‐making within complex government processes.
Build and maintain strong relationships with leaders across government, business, unions, academia and the broader community to support reform outcomes.
Provide economic leadership for productivity reform, shaping and contributing to informed public discussion on economic policy and living standards.
Advocate for change, negotiating, influencing and building the case for reform in an environment where results are often achieved through influence rather than authority.

Identify reforms that lift productivity and improve living standards across NSW.
Ensure policy advice considers equity and fairness, including the distribution of costs and benefits across communities, locations and generations.
Strengthen the quality, credibility and public trust in economic policy advice.
Help Government and the community understand why productivity reform matters and how it supports long‐term prosperity.
About you
You are an experienced and reputable senior leader with a strong record of influencing public policy and reform within complex environments.
You bring:
Extensive experience formulating strategic, evidence‐based policy initiatives, supported by rigorous analysis and sound judgement.
Credibility and standing across government and external stakeholders, with your advice respected and sought after.
A deep understanding of how government operates, including Parliament, Cabinet, legislation, and the machinery of government.




Exceptional stakeholder engagement and communication skills, with the ability to explain complex issues clearly and persuasively to diverse audiences.
Proven ability to negotiate, influence and build consensus, operating effectively in environments without direct line authority.
Integrity, resilience and intellectual leadership, enabling you to provide frank, independent advice in the public interest.
Relevant tertiary qualifications or equivalent professional experience are required.
Reporting line
The NSW Productivity and Equality Commissioner reports to the Deputy Secretary, Economic Strategy and Productivity Group, NSW Treasury.
