The Senior Project Officer (SPO), Food Regulation Standing Committee (FRSC), plays a pivotal role in supporting the national Food Regulation System by delivering high-quality project management, policy analysis and secretariat support.
The position enables FRSC to effectively fulfil its functions and contributes directly to system-wide outcomes through the delivery of the System Workplan.
Working at the centre of a complex, bi-national regulatory environment, the SPO drives priority initiatives on behalf of FRSC, its working groups and the FRSC Planning Subcommittee.
The role ensures that all activities align with the broader System Workplan, as led by the Senior Director, and translates strategic priorities into well-governed, timely and high-quality outputs.
As part of the virtual System Office, the SPO collaborates closely with the Senior Director, the Implementation Subcommittee for Food Regulation (ISFR) Senior Project Officer, and the Project Officer.
Together, this team supports the delivery of current priorities while contributing to longer-term strategic planning across the System.
The position requires the provision of high-level policy analysis, the management of complex cross-jurisdictional projects, and the delivery of effective governance and coordination support to FRSC and its substructures.
The SPO is responsible for ensuring consistent, accurate and strategically aligned advice, often while balancing competing priorities and responding to emerging or sensitive issues.
This role suits a highly capable and adaptable professional who is comfortable operating with a high degree of autonomy, navigating complexity, and building strong working relationships across jurisdictions to deliver impactful outcomes for Australia's food regulation system.
The key duties of the position include:
Develop,



deliver and report on the FRSC Senior Project Officer Workplan in alignment with the broader System Workplan.
Lead and manage complex cross-jurisdictional projects from design through to delivery, ensuring high-quality outcomes.
Provide high-level policy analysis on priority issues, including interpretation of legislation and regulatory frameworks.
Prepare clear, accurate and timely briefing materials, reports, meeting papers and consultation documents.
Support FRSC, its working groups and the FRSC Planning Subcommittee with effective governance and secretariat services.
Facilitate meetings and workshops, including coordinating logistics, agendas, records and follow-up actions.
Deliver consistent, accurate and strategic advice to committee members and stakeholders across jurisdictions.
Manage competing priorities and emerging issues, ensuring timely progression of work in a dynamic environment.
Coordinate stakeholder engagement and act as a central point for communication, collaboration and issue resolution.
Maintain robust records and documentation to ensure accountability, traceability and continuous improvement.
EligibilityTo be eligible for employment with the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing, applicants must be an Australian citizen at the time an offer of employment is made.
An applicant's suitability for employment with Health will also be assessed through a variety of pre-employment check processes, such as:
Satisfactory completion of a criminal history check, and where relevant, a Working with Children and Vulnerable People Check,




Completion of a medical declaration and pre-employment medical (where required),
Providing evidence of qualifications (where required), and
Obtaining and maintaining a security clearance at the required level.
For this role applicants must be able to obtain and maintain a Baseline security clearance or hold a current security clearance at an appropriate level.
This role involves occasional travel.
Mandatory experience:
Experience with and solid knowledge of the Food Regulation System.
Desirable experience:
Extensive project management experience, including management of complex, multi-stakeholder projects.
Experience in regulatory, public sector and multi-government environments.
Background in project management, policy, science, public health or a related discipline.
