Health and Safety Superintendent - Mining

About the role
The HST Superintendent (Mining) provides operational leadership for health, safety, and training functions across all land-based mining operations at Bauxite Hills Mine.
This role is accountable for implementing the Safety and Health Management System within mining operations, managing the critical risk register for mining activities, and ensuring compliance with Queensland mining legislation, including the Mining and Quarrying Safety and Health Act ****.
The position works closely with operational leadership to integrate safety into all mining activities, including extraction, haulage, screening, stockpile management, and barge loading interface.
This role holds lead responsibility for emergency response coordination within mining operations.
The role requires robust field presence, technical mining knowledge, and the ability to influence safety behaviors across a diverse workforce, including contractors.
The HST function operates as one integrated team servicing both Mining and Marine operations.
Whilst this role has a primary focus on mining, all HST team members are expected to support and contribute across the whole operation as required.
This will include regular participation with activities as part of the HST team, and may include activities such as HST Training, cross skilling, focused or targeted activities (ie PPE Blitz), team building, and leave cover as required.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide day-to-day leadership, direction, and support to HST Advisors (Mining and Marine) during rostered swings.
Act as the on-site HST Superintendent, providing oversight and coordination across all HST functions, including Advisors, Trainers, Administrators, and Medics.
Lead the implementation and continual improvement of health, safety, and training systems across mining operations, including extraction, haulage, screening, and stockpile management.
Maintain accountability for the Mining Critical Risk Register, including bow-tie development, critical control identification, and verification activities.
Develop, implement, and review mining procedures to ensure compliance with the Mining and Quarrying Safety and Health Act (MQSHA) and associated regulations.
Lead incident investigations for mining operations and facilitate ICAM investigations for HPIs
Accountable for corrective action tracking and close-out for mining-related incidents and hazards
Manage contractor HST requirements for mining contractors including onboarding and verification
Provide input into training needs analysis for mining operations roles
Accountable for high-risk work training, authorisations, and permit systems within mining operations
Conduct and facilitate risk assessments for mining activities including new tasks and changes
Oversee JSEA and Take 5 processes within mining operations and ensure quality
Support Site Senior Executive (SSE) with statutory compliance requirements under MQSHA
Lead safety interactions, observations, and critical control verification activities
Coordinate with Marine Superintendent on interface risk management at barge loading facility
Contribute to lead and lag indicator monitoring and monthly HST reporting
Execute Drug and Alcohol Program requirements on-ground
Monitor and enforce fatigue management compliance within mining operations
Emergency Response Responsibilities:
Responsible for ERT coordination and capability for mining operations
Lead emergency response for mining-related incidents including mobile equipment and personnel
Ensure mining personnel are trained and competent in emergency response procedures
Lead site-wide emergency response for mining incidents, with BHO Superintendent providing administrative and reporting support.
Maintain emergency equipment for mining operations including firefighting and rescue equipment
Participate in crisis management team as required
Qualifications and Experience:
Diploma or Cert IV in Work Health and Safety (essential)
Queensland Mining Supervisor competencies (S1, S2, S3 / G1, G8, G9) (essential)
High Risk Work Licences relevant to mining operations (desirable)
Cert IV in Training and Assessment (desirable)
Minimum 7 years' experience in health, safety, and training roles with at least 3 years in mining operations
Demonstrated experience in open-cut mining operations (essential)
Strong understanding of Queensland mining legislation and regulatory requirements
Experience with critical risk management and bow-tie methodology
Proven ability to conduct incident investigations and lead ICAM processes
Experience managing contractor HST in mining environments
Demonstrated ability to influence and engage with operational teams and frontline workers
