The Organisation
Our client is a growing Australian energy business with ambitious plans and a diverse portfolio spanning gas production, storage, processing and emerging energy projects. With around 60 employees, the business remains agile, entrepreneurial and highly collaborative, giving legal genuine visibility and influence across the organisation.
The Role
Reporting directly to the CEO, this is a rare opportunity to step into a sole legal counsel role with broad exposure across legal, commercial and operational Reporting directly to the CEO, this is a rare opportunity to step into a sole legal counsel role with broad exposure across legal, commercial and operational matters. It's a genuinely part legal, part commercial role — ideal for someone who wants real variety and challenge, rather than a narrow, single-discipline practice.
You'll partner with stakeholders across the business, providing pragmatic advice that helps projects progress, risks are managed and commercial objectives are achieved. This is a role for a lawyer who enjoys being close to the business and is genuinely curious about how it operates, and thrives on variety . and turning their hand to whatever comes next.
The Work Itself
You'll work across a broad range of matters, including:
Commercial contracts and negotiations
Procurement and supplier arrangements
Product sales and commercial agreements
Business development and growth initiatives
Joint ventures and stakeholder matters
Land access and tenure issues
Regulatory and compliance advice
Environmental matters
Corporate governance and risk management
Management of external legal counsel
No two days are the same.

You'll take ownership of your matters while working closely with senior stakeholders across the business.
Where You'll Land
Join a growing, entrepreneurial business where legal is a valued partner and common sense drives decision-making. Working closely with an approachable leadership team, you'll gain broad commercial exposure and the opportunity to make a genuine contribution from day one. The role also offers hybrid working (3 office days per week), an attractive bonus scheme and 12 weeks paid parental leave.
Sound Like You?
An Australian qualified lawyer with approximately 7-10+ years' PAE and strong commercial contracting experience. You may be coming from private practice, government or an in-house environment.
Above all, you bring positive judgment and genuine pragmatism — you know when "good enough" is the right commercial call, rather than chasing a perfect risk position. You're flexible and adaptable, comfortable being pulled across a genuinely varied caseload, and just as interested in understanding the business as you are in the contracts themselves. You build rapport easily with people from all backgrounds and disciplines, and you're not afraid to put your hand up and ask questions when you're out of your depth. Experience in energy, resources, infrastructure or another regulated industry will be viewed favourably, but is not essential.
