Join the Work Health &Safety; Division and play a key role in strengthening safety systems andfostering a proactive safety culture across GEGAC. The WHS Officer supports theimplementation, monitoring, and continuous improvement of WHS practices, ensuringcompliance with legislative, regulatory, and cultural obligations. This rolecontributes to workplace inspections, audits, incident management, emergencypreparedness, and the maintenance of accurate WHS documentation and systems.
Organisational Profile
GEGAC is an AboriginalCommunity Controlled Organisation based in Bairnsdale Victoria. Consisting ofabout 200 staff, GEGAC is a Not-for-Profit organisation that delivers holisticservices in the areas of Primary Health, Social Services, Elders &Disability; and Early Childhood Education.
GEGAC advocates for the self-determination of the Aboriginal community by prioritising services thatenhance social, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing, with culture at the heartof everything we do.
Position Purpose
Working within the WorkHealth & Safety Division, the Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) Officer supports the WHS Coordinator in strengthening organisational safety systems andpromoting a proactive safety culture. The role assists with the implementation,monitoring, and continuous improvement of WHS practices across all areas ofGEGAC, ensuring alignment with legislative, regulatory, and culturalobligations. The Officer also contributes to WHS inspections and audits,incident reporting and investigations, emergency management activities, andmaintains accurate WHS documentation and registers.
Key Selection Criteria
Demonstrated experience supporting WHSsystems development, implementation,



and auditing/inspections.
Demonstrated ability to write reportsand maintain accurate WHD documentation and registers.
Sound knowledge of Victorian WHSlegislation, Regulations, and relevant codes of practice.
Experience supporting incidentreporting and investigations; ability to contribute to trend analysis andaction tracking.
Excellent communication skills andstakeholder engagement ability at all levels.
Demonstrated understanding of culturalsafety principles and their application in workplace health and safety.
Sound working knowledge of MicrosoftOffice and use of IT/software and administrative processed.
Proficient in incident investigationmethodologies (e.g., ICAM, Root Cause Analysis).
Experience with RTW processes and workerscompensation administration.
Qualifications and RegistrationsRequirement (Essential or Desirable).
Valid Victorian driver's licence
ESSENTIAL
Understanding of Occupational Health& Safety (OH&S;) legislation and frameworks relevant to Victoria andAustralia
DESIRABLE
Qualification in Occupational Health &Safety; (OH&S;) (Certificate IV or above or willing to obtain qualification withinan agreed timeframe)
ESSENTIAL
A satisfactory Working with ChildrenCheck and Fit2Work Police Check
ESSENTIAL
Experience in working within an OccupationalHealth & Safety (OH&S;) space
DESIRABLE
A person of Aboriginal and or Torres Strait Islanderbackground
DESIRABLE
Experience in working with an ACCHO/ACCO or anot-for-profit organisation
DESIRABLE
Proof of COVID-19 vaccinated to align with GEGACrequirements
