Graduate Engineer – Product Development
2-Year Graduate Program | IMRA Surgical | Melbourne
About IMRA Surgical
IMRA Surgical develops highly realistic synthetic anatomy and surgical training models used to support the training, development and adoption of robotic and laparoscopic surgery.
We are looking for aGraduate Engineer – Product Developmentto join our Product Development team through a structured two-year graduate program designed to build solid practical engineering capability from the ground up.
This is a highly hands-on role for someone who enjoysbuilding, testing, solving problems and turning ideas into physical products.
The Graduate Program
Year 1 – Learn How We Build
Your first year will be focused on working closely with ourProduct Development and Material Science teamsas a Prototype Assembler.
You will learn IMRA's materials, manufacturing processes and product architecture by directly building and testing prototypes.
You will gain practical experience in:
Building anatomical prototypes and development models
Working with polymers, hydrogels, silicones and other synthetic materials
Understanding manufacturing processes, tooling and assembly methods
Following drawings, specifications and work instructions
Identifying manufacturing and design issues through hands-on testing
Supporting engineers and scientists through product development iterations
Recording test results and development data
The objective is simple:understand how our products are made before you start designing the next generation of them.
Year 2 – Develop Products
In your second year, you will progressively apply the knowledge gained during Year 1 to take greater ownership of product and model development.
You will work with the wider Product Development team to:
Design, build and iterate new surgical models and product concepts
Develop prototypes and evaluate different design approaches

Use CAD to support component and product design
Develop and execute test plans
Analyse test data and communicate findings
Prepare engineering test reports and development documentationSupport design reviews and risk assessments
Translate clinical and user requirements into engineering solutions
Work with manufacturing teams to ensure products can be produced reliably and at scale
You will still spend significant timebuilding and testing.
We believe strong product engineers should understand their products physically, not just through CAD and documentation.
About You
You will ideally have recently completed, or be close to completing, a degree in:
Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Product Design Engineering, or a similar discipline.
We are looking for someone with:
A strong engineering and problem-solving mindset
An interest in anatomy, surgery and medical technology
Some understanding of human anatomy
Practical CAD capability
An understanding of engineering iteration and product development
Familiarity with test plans, test reports and data analysis
An understanding of engineering risk assessment
Strong attention to detail
A willingness to build, test, fail, learn and iterate
Most importantly, you should enjoymaking things.
This role will suit someone who is just as comfortable at a workbench building a prototype as they are analysing data, developing a CAD model or documenting why a design worked.
What You'll Learn
By the end of the two-year program, you will have developed practical experience across the full product development lifecycle — from materials and prototyping through to design, testing, validation and manufacturing.
You will have worked alongside engineers, material scientists, clinicians and manufacturing specialists developing physical products for the surgical technology industry.
For the right person, the program is intended to provide a pathway into an ongoingProduct Development Engineerrole within IMRA Surgical.
