The Vice President of Finance at Flagship Pioneering will play a vital strategic role within Flagship Labs, supporting a diverse portfolio of early-stage biotechnology companies.
This leadership position involves overseeing comprehensive financial operations, providing expert financial guidance to company leaders, and partnering with various teams to facilitate growth and operational excellence.
The role requires a robust background in biotech finance, with responsibilities including managing month-end closings, cash management, budgeting, forecasting, and preparing financial reports.
The Vice President will be instrumental in aligning financial strategies with scientific and business milestones, ensuring the portfolio companies' financial health and strategic objectives are met.

What you'll do
Collaborate closely with leadership teams of portfolio companies to develop and refine long-term strategic financial plans that support scientific and commercial milestones.
Build detailed financial models to evaluate growth opportunities, investment needs, and potential exit strategies, ensuring alignment with overall corporate objectives.
Partner with Pioneering Business Unit Leadership, Flagship Labs Leadership, Business Analytics, and the Pipeline & Product Innovation team to create value maps that identify and unlock growth potential for portfolio companies.
Manage cash flow planning meticulously to ensure sufficient liquidity for ongoing operations, scientific development, and strategic investments, while aligning with financing needs and scientific milestones.
Lead the preparation, review, and presentation of annual budgets, rolling forecasts, and long-term financial plans, working closely with Financial Planning & Analysis teams to ensure accuracy and strategic alignment.
Prepare comprehensive financial documentation and reports for Board meetings, investor updates, and governance activities, ensuring clarity and transparency.
Oversee the Venture Debt strategy, including execution, governance, and reporting, ensuring proper management of paydowns, amortization schedules, and compliance with debt covenants.
Partner with the Facilities team to optimize space allocation across portfolio companies,



planning for future growth, capital needs, and operational efficiencies.
Lead and support projects related to financial systems implementation, process improvements, and automation initiatives to enhance efficiency and accuracy in financial reporting.
Provide strategic financial analysis and insights through ad hoc reports, scenario analysis, and risk assessments to support decision-making at the senior leadership level.
Ensure compliance with all relevant financial regulations, internal policies, and ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations) requirements, maintaining high standards of financial integrity.
Monitor and evaluate financial performance metrics, identifying areas for improvement and implementing corrective actions as necessary.
Engage with external auditors during audits, ensuring timely completion and full compliance with regulatory standards.
Support the integration of new portfolio companies, including onboarding financial systems, establishing reporting frameworks, and aligning financial processes.
Maintain a thorough understanding of biotech industry trends, funding environments, and regulatory changes to inform financial strategies and risk management.
Requirements
Over 10 years of extensive experience in finance and accounting within the life sciences or biotechnology sectors.
Experience with a company that has successfully gone public is highly advantageous.
Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field; an MBA and/or CPA certification is strongly preferred.
Demonstrated ability to develop and manage complex financial models, budgets, and forecasts in a fast-paced environment.
Proven track record of working with early-stage biotech companies, venture capital, or private equity investors, with a solid understanding of their financial needs and challenges.
Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret organizational strategy into actionable financial insights.
Excellent project management skills, with the ability to handle multiple priorities and coordinate cross-functional teams effectively.
Exceptional communication and presentation skills,



capable of conveying complex financial information clearly to senior management, boards, and external stakeholders.
Deep understanding of cash flow management, debt financing, and financial reporting standards relevant to biotech and life sciences companies.
Experience with financial systems and tools used in biotech, along with proficiency in Excel and other financial analysis software.
Knowledge of ITAR regulations and compliance requirements is a plus.
Ability to work independently, demonstrate high integrity, and uphold confidentiality in sensitive financial matters.
Nice to have
Experience with venture capital or private equity financing, including fund structuring and investor reporting.
Familiarity with financial software platforms used in biotech and life sciences industries.
Prior involvement in public company financial reporting processes, including SEC filings and Sarbanes-Oxley compliance.
Knowledge of international finance considerations, especially in relation to global funding and regulatory environments.
Experience working in a highly innovative, fast-growth environment with a focus on scientific and technological advancements.
Skills & tools
Advanced proficiency in financial modeling, scenario analysis, and valuation techniques.
Strong understanding of accounting principles, financial regulations, and compliance standards applicable to biotech companies.
Expertise in cash flow management, debt structuring, and financial forecasting.
Familiarity with enterprise financial systems, ERP platforms, and reporting tools used in biotech settings.
Excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify issues proactively and implement effective solutions.
Strong interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with internal teams, external partners, and investors.

The role offers a competitive salary range of $265,000 - $330,000, depending on experience and qualifications.
