The Role A space-based Engineering Technologist at a power company primarily uses satellite technology to enhance the power grid.
This role requires the successful candidate to manage projects from start to finish, ensuring the effective and cohesive operation of both space and ground systems to meet the company's operational and strategic goals.
Key duties involve: Designing and implementing satellite communication systems, Utilising satellite data for grid analysis, and Integrating space-based technology into existing ground infrastructure.
Core duties
System design and architecture: Design and define the architecture for satellite-based communication, monitoring, or sensing systems to be used by the power company.
This includes analyzing performance and technical specifications.
Power and communication integration:
Ensure that satellite power systems and communication links are compatible with the power company's ground infrastructure and can transmit data and commands reliably.
Mission and project management: Oversee the entire lifecycle of a project, including research, design, development, testing, and deployment of space-based assets, ensuring they meet the company's objectives.
Stakeholder management: Coordinate with internal teams (e.g., grid operations, IT, finance) and external partners (e.g., satellite operators, vendors) to ensure seamless integration and collaboration.
Data analysis: Work with and analyze data from satellites to support power grid management, such as monitoring assets, predicting demand, or assessing grid health and stability.
Technical oversight: Ensure that all subsystems of a space-based system function correctly together, addressing any integration issues or performance bottlenecks that arise.
Testing and validation: Develop and execute test plans for new systems and validate that they meet performance and safety requirements before and during deployment.
Risk and compliance management: Identify and manage risks associated with using space-based technology and ensure compliance with relevant regulations and standards.
Example scenario: A power company might employ a space-based systems engineer to create a system for real-time monitoring of remote substations.
The engineer would design a system using a constellation of small satellites to collect data.
Their duties would include: Defining the requirements for the satellite communication system, including data rates and latency.
Designing the satellite payload and its integration with the company's ground control software.
Ensuring the system's power budget is adequate for its mission lifespan.
Testing the system on the ground to verify its performance before launch.
Collaborating with the satellite operator to ensure smooth data delivery once the system is operational
