About Merri-bek City Council
Merri‑bek City Council is a progressive council of 195,125 residents: one community, proudly diverse. About The Role
This is a Special Measures role designated only to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals who are eligible to apply. It is a permanent full‑time role based at Glenroy and Fawkner Libraries.
Responsibilities
- Organise book groups and other reader development programs.
- Conduct local history talks.
- Promote and acquire adult collection items and e‑resources, and identify and acquire items for the ganbo marra and local studies collections.
- Supervise staff and work placement students, and provide culturally safe programming for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
- Assist in the maintenance, organisation and preservation of materials relating to the history of the local community.
Skills and Experience Required
- Teamwork, supervisory and communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to resolve problems using creativity and originality when required, and to defuse potential conflict.
- Ability to contribute to and deliver projects and programmes, including developing, planning, implementing, and reviewing, within agreed timeframes.
- Ability to consistently lead,
motivate and coach staff and to gain the cooperation and support of team members to achieve team goals and objectives.
- Demonstrated experience in organising community‑based programmes and services to targeted groups.
- Demonstrated experience in information provision and collection management.
- Demonstrated customer service experience.
- Eligibility for professional membership of the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA).
- Demonstrated understanding of child safety and wellbeing requirements and how this applies in the library setting.
- A current Working with Children Check.

Employment Details
Full‑time permanent role based on 35 hours per week. Salary $86k – $97k plus super. Ability to transfer or take Long Service Leave within Local Government. Fortnightly RDO.
