Position Overview

The Mechanical Engineering Technician will work under the direction of Mechanical Engineers and Engineering Technologists to support the design, development, installation, testing, and maintenance of mechanical equipment, laser cutting systems, CNC machinery, and fabrication plant. The role ensures all mechanical systems, tooling, and production equipment operate efficiently and comply with engineering specifications, safety standards, and contractual requirements.

Task & responsibilities





- Preparing detailed mechanical drawings, fabrication layouts and production plans for laser-cut components, CNC-machined parts and fabricated assemblies under the direction of Mechanical Engineers and Engineering Technologists.
- Assisting Mechanical Engineers and Engineering Technologists in the design, modification and improvement of mechanical equipment, tooling systems, fixtures and plant machinery used in laser cutting and metal fabrication operations.
- Selecting appropriate machine tools, cutting tools, fixtures, hydraulic components and mechanical equipment required for laser cutting, CNC machining and fabrication processes.
- Assembling, installing and commissioning new and modified mechanical assemblies, including laser cutting machines, CNC equipment, hydraulic power systems and automated handling systems.
- Assisting in upgrading, adjusting and retrofitting plant machinery to improve operational efficiency, precision and reliability.
- Estimating material quantities, machine requirements and production timeframes for laser-cut and fabricated components in accordance with project specifications.
- Performing and directing workshop and field tests on mechanical equipment, plant machinery and fabricated components to ensure functionality and performance.
- Collecting and analysing operational data, carrying out engineering calculations and preparing technical diagrams, reports and documentation.
- Organising and supervising routine inspection, servicing and preventative maintenance of machines,



plant equipment and hydraulic systems to minimise downtime.
- Diagnosing mechanical faults and assisting in implementing corrective measures to maintain production continuity.
- Ensuring that mechanical designs, assembled components and finished products comply with engineering drawings, Australian Standards, safety regulations and contractual specifications.
- Supporting quality assurance processes and maintaining accurate technical records to ensure all work remains within required specifications and regulatory provisions.

Qualification & experience

- AQF Diploma or Advanced Diploma in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
- Minimum 1 year of relevant industry experience in manufacturing, fabrication, laser cutting, or CNC operations.
- Proficiency in CAD software and mechanical drafting.
- Strong understanding of hydraulic systems, plant machinery, and production equipment.
- Knowledge of Australian Standards and workplace safety requirements.
- Ability to perform engineering calculations and technical reporting.
