Mechanical Engineer - Rolling Stock & Rail Industry

Inver Engineering is seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer to play a key role in supporting the servicing and overhaul of Australia’s Rail passenger and freight operators Rolling Stock. With over 35 years’ experience in servicing Australia’s Rail industry from our Melbourne facility, we have grown into a trusted partner of choice for all customers and as a result of our growth, we have an exciting opportunity for the right person.

Based in Altona, we service the breadth of Australia. This is a hands-on position suited to an engineer who enjoys being involved throughout the full project lifecycle, including site measurement, design development, production support, and final delivery.

About the Role

- Developing engineering solutions to meet customer and project requirements.
- Producing and reviewing technical drawings, specifications, and manufacturing documentation.
- Supporting production teams through design, fabrication, assembly, and delivery phases.
- Monitoring project progress and assisting with scheduling, cost control, and resource utilisation.
- Developing jigs, fixtures, and other manufacturing aids to improve production efficiency.
- Assisting with the development and implementation of new manufacturing methods and processes.
- Coordinating with suppliers, customers, and transport providers to ensure timely delivery of materials and components.
- Ensuring all work complies with quality, safety, environmental, and customer requirements.
- Contributing to continuous improvement initiatives across engineering and manufacturing operations.

About You

- A degree in Mechanical Engineering.




- Registration as a Professional Engineer in Victoria (or eligibility to obtain registration within an agreed timeframe).
- Experience delivering engineering projects within rolling stock, rail, heavy manufacturing, or a related industry.
- Robust knowledge of rolling stock systems, including modification, refurbishment, maintenance, reliability, or asset improvement projects.
- Practical understanding of manufacturing processes, production methods, scheduling, and costing.
- Proficiency with CAD software and technical drawing packages.
- The ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, standards, and technical documentation.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to prepare, review, and maintain engineering documentation.
- Experience working within multidisciplinary project teams and managing multiple priorities.

Desirable Qualifications and Experience

- Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) and/or National Engineering Register (NER) accreditation.
- Experience within rail, rolling stock, or transport infrastructure sectors.
