Established in 1979 by the Ballarat Aboriginal community in the Ballarat district, BADAC’s vision is to be the strongest voice and presence in the Ballarat area, supporting and respecting their people, enhancing our community, growing their culture and honouring their heritage. BADAC is the Aboriginal Community-Controlled Organisation (ACCO) for the Ballarat and District area, covering 4 local government areas (LGAs). The organisation is extremely proud of the contribution and support they have provided the local Aboriginal community over the past 40 years delivering a comprehensive range of health, social, welfare and community development programs to local Aboriginal people.

The Opportunity

We currently have an opportunity for a Family Services Case Coordinator who is passionateto make a differenceon a Part Time Fixed Term Basis (2 years) working 22.6 hours per week.

Reporting to the Family Services Program Manager, the Family Services Case Coordinator will work alongside Case Managers and the wider Family Services Team to provide support to families and assist with allocation of internal and external referrals. Referrals may be from such stakeholders as Gobata Burron, DFFH, The Orange Door as well as other external stakeholders. The Case Coordinator will assist with intake processes for new families, accompanying Case Managers to home visits, meetings and other relevant support.

The Family Services Case Coordinator will support the below subprograms within the BADAC’s Family Services program;

- Connecting

- Strengthening

- Response

- Restoring Families

The Case Coordinator will complete in-depth check ins with families, assist with the development of routines and activity scheduling for families to ensure. The Case Coordinator will focus on families providing a safe environment for children engaged within the program.

The aim of this role is to support vulnerable families and youth who are at risk by providing early identification and intervention to prevent further engagement from Child Protection, while encouraging self-determination, resilience and reducing harm to children and young people.

The Family Group Conferencing component will support families to lead their own meetings. This will promote self-determination,



allowing for families to discuss and share their wishes, ensuring all families feel heard. These meetings are for restoring families, clients and will require formal minutes taken.

The Case Coordinator will be provided the opportunity to establish appropriate community networks, develop and maintain qualified working relationships with a broad range of stakeholders and partner agencies such as DFFH and internal BADAC services.

The Case Coordinator will need to be highly motivated, enthusiastic and have a sound knowledge of Aboriginal culture with the ability to communicate effectively with Aboriginal people. The incumbent will work with relative independence, while remaining strongly focused on collaboration and working across with other Case Managers, internal programs, Child Protection and others in the service sector.

Key Responsibilities

- Provide support to all families, carers and young people actively engaged within the BADAC Family Services Program. This includes assessing and monitoring child safety concerns and making reports if required.

- Engage with children, young people and their families using a variety of engagement strategies such as assertive engagement, outreach, persistence and strengths-based problem solving.

- Assist with allocating new referrals to the programs and completing intake and assessment when required. Navigate referrals from DFFH, ACAC, TOD then allocate these to Case Managers

- Support families, caregivers and young people by utilising a variety of interventions and frameworks including but not limited to Best Interest Case Management Framework.

- Work alongside BADAC Family Services Case Managers for case updates as well as complete tasks that are required for any active families, home visits, meetings and advocacy.

- Ensure the completion of case notes, assessments and observations with all families to align with service delivery times in line with program guidelines.

- Support families to connect to other internal services at BADAC and/or external services. Eg: at point of allocation, or anytime during their support period to ensure families feel connected & supported.

- Facilitate Family Group Conference meetings for active restoring families. This will be completed alongside Case managers when families are ready to attend.

- Adhere to the Family Group Conference target of 1 per quarter, in collaboration with case managers and other professionals.

- Maintain strict standards of confidentiality and, act in a professional manner in accordance with the policies and procedures of the Ballarat and District Aboriginal Cooperative.

- Engage in regular supervision,



reflective practice and opportunities for planned professional development.

- Liaise with and maintain positive working relationships with other relevant organisations.

- Participation in the planning and review of service delivery.

- Sound knowledge and understanding of OHS.

- Other duties as required or requested by the Team Leader & Program Manager.

Key Selection Criteria

- Sound knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal Culture and values and the ability to communicate with Aboriginal children and their families and demonstrated ability to support Aboriginal people in their healing.

- Demonstrated ability to work in a way that promotes Aboriginal children’s cultural identity and promotes their connection to family, community and culture acknowledging that connection to culture, Community and country is fundamental to supporting the safety and identity of Aboriginal children.

- Skills in working with Aboriginal children, young people and their families to build strength and resilience with a clear understanding of child safety.

- Relevant qualification in Diploma of Community Services or equivalent or willingness to work towards such qualification.

- Sound understanding of the Children, Youth and Family Act 2005 as well as the information sharing provisions.

- Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills including demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of people, including families, government and community, health, education and welfare services.

- Confidence to raise concerns regarding potential risk with Family Services team/Management if disclosures are made or concerns have been observed for the family, children or young people.

- Strong literacy and administration skills including maintaining accurate files, writing case notes, assisting in assessments, computer data records, summary of observations writing and report writing.

- Capacity to support and work alongside the team, effectively contribute to the goals set by families, work alongside Case Managers

- Understanding and implementing of a range engagement strategies for disengaged Parents and young people, who may have trust issues with services.

- Understanding and knowledge in trauma and attachment theory.
