Arena is building a global sports technology platform designed to bring fans closer to the moments, athletes, teams and leagues they care about.

We are preparing for public launch and have significant momentum across product, sport, commercial partnerships and capital. Our platform brings together live sports data, personalised content, match centres, athlete and team experiences, AI-generated sports content, commercial infrastructure and brand partnerships.

We have an established offshore engineering base and are now strengthening our onshore capability in Melbourne. This role is a key hire for the next phase of Arena’s build: someone who can take ownership, move quickly, raise engineering standards and help us launch a high-quality product into market.

The Role

We are looking for a Data Architect to build our data foundation from scratch. You will design our framework, model domains, establish our data dictionary and define our governance processes. This is a hands‑on role reporting directly to the Head of Engineering in a fast‑paced startup environment.

You will work closely with Product, Design, Engineering leadership and our offshore development team to take ownership of key platform components, improve data visibility, support governance, and help build the foundations for a scalable global sports platform.

You will be expected to be hands‑on across the data stack, pragmatic in your decision‑making and comfortable operating in a fast-moving startup environment where priorities are clear, standards are high and momentum matters.

What You’ll Own

Create conceptual, logical,



and physical data models optimised for analytics and transactional systems.

Establish blueprints for cloud data warehouses, data lakes, and data mesh architectures.

Define strict data security policies, compliance standards (such as GDPR or HIPAA), and retention rules.

Evaluate and choose appropriate database engines, cloud services, and integration tools

Build, improve and scale end‑to‑end data management functionality.

Work closely with our offshore development team to support technical setup of tools and processes

Help harden the platform ahead of public launch, with a focus on reliability, performance, observability, scalability and maintainability.

Bring a high‑performance mindset to a small but ambitious team.

What You’ll Bring

5+ years’ data engineering/architecture experience, ideally in a high‑scale, product‑led or startup environment.

Experience implementing data governance tools such as DataHub or similar

Strong analytics backend in SQL and NoSQL (ideally Apache Cassandra or similar high‑throughput data stores) databases

Experience implementing data warehouses and BI tooling

Practical experience with cloud infrastructure, ideally Google Cloud Platform.

Ability to work with offshore development teams





Strong written documentation habits and the ability to make complex technical concepts clear.

A bias toward ownership, urgency and pragmatic problem‑solving.
