The Security and Intelligence Division is a specialist division that provides security, intelligence and emergency management services to Corrections Victoria. There are a variety of career opportunities within the division. Some roles require specific experience or qualifications, and others you can work towards after starting as a prison officer. Each team plays a critical role in maintaining the safety and security of Victoria’s correctional system.

The Security and Emergency Services Group (SESG) plays an significant role in maintaining the safety and security of Victoria’s correctional system. They provide a response capability across the state to support the safety of people in custody, staff and the community.

SESG are qualified in the use of specialist equipment, tactics and weapons. This ensures they are prepared to respond to a range of emergency situations, including large-scale and high-risk incidents. SESG conducts high security escorts for people in custody being transported in and out of the prison.

It also involves specialist training in working at heights that allows SESG teams to safely remove individuals from the roof spaces of correctional facilities.

The SESG State training team deliver training for new prison officers and operational staff that focuses on building core response skills. It also provides upskilling to specialist groups within Victoria’s correctional facilities.

SESG members start as uniformed senior prison officers who manage complex and high-risk situations. They complete both prison officer training and additional specialised training. Career pathways within the SESG include roles such as supervisor, operations manager and more.

As a General Duties Senior Prison Officer at SESG, you work within a passionate and close-knit team supporting security response activities across the facility. These roles may be available at multiple facilities across the state.

The SESG canine group plays a key role in supporting a safe and secure correctional system. There are 2 types of dogs that work with canine handlers to assist with security operations across our facilities

- multi-purpose dogs
- passive alert detection dogs

Canine handlers train and work alongside these dogs to provide operational support within SESG. Canine handlers must house an operational canine in their home, with all food and supplies provided.

The Security Standards Unit (SSU) is an important part of the Security and Intelligence Division at Corrections Victoria

SSU helps to keep Victoria’s correctional system safe and running smoothly through specialist expertise, made up of four dedicated teams, including risk management, locksmithing, innovation and technology and schematic planning.

These teams work to provide specialist risk assessment and management to our facilities. Some services provided are

- statewide specialist risk assessments including documentation and mitigation strategies
- management of technical site plans for Corrections Victoria facilities
- maintenance of the locking systems across facilities
- research and implementation of new security technologies





The unit also plays a key role in leading large-scale projects and advising on minimum security standards for prisons and transition centres.

The Corrections Victoria Intelligence Unit (CVIU)

Provides specialist intelligence services across the corrections system. The team supports the management of high-risk individuals and contributes to operational planning across the state. CVIU works closely with the SESG, as well as governance panels and operational teams across Corrections Victoria.

CVIU also works closely with law enforcement partners and supports other justice partners including the Adult Parole Board, Community Correctional Services and Youth Justice. Their work helps inform decisions about parole suitability, post-sentence order management and emerging risks in both custodial and community settings. The team also carries out digital forensic audits and provides advice on technology use within prisons.

The Emergency Management Unit (EMU)

Leads the development of emergency management capability across the correctional system, including state and private prisons, transition centres, post-sentence facilities and youth justice facilities. This ensures the correctional system is better able to prepare for, respond to and recover from emergencies.

THE EMU achieves this by

- assisting emergency management portfolio holders with planning, facilitating and evaluating emergency management exercises
- delivering management system for emergencies and field commander training

Roles within these teams are advertised as they are required and may not be available at all times.
