About the role

As a Project Officer - Hazardous Materials, you will support the Project Managers in the delivery of projects and programs relating to asbestos and other Hazardous Building Materials (HBMs) across Sydney Water's land and property portfolio. Working closely with Project Managers, you will help ensure legislative compliance, manage risk, and provide technical support across a diverse range of assets and projects. Additionally, you will provide technical subject matter expertise to the business under the supervision and guidance of the Project Managers.

What you will be doing

- Support the Project Managers in the delivery of Hazardous Building Materials (HBM) assessment, remediation and management projects across Sydney Water's property and building portfolio.
- Provide technical advice relating to asbestos and other HBMs in response to business and stakeholder requests across the asset lifecycle.
- Assist with the maintenance, data entry and ongoing management of HBM (Asbestos) Registers, associated databases and Sydney Water's HBM Management Plan.
- Support risk management activities by identifying, assessing and helping mitigate asbestos and HBM-related risks in accordance with legislative requirements.
- Review property and asset portfolios to identify requirements for new or updated HBM registers and assessments.
- Assist with the development of contractor project scope of services and procurement.
- Assist with the coordination and support of consultants and contractors undertaking asbestos and HBM investigations and remediation activities.




- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, business processes and Environmental Management System compliance.
- Build and maintain effective working relationships with internal stakeholders, land managers, regulators and contractors.

About you

You will bring technical knowledge of asbestos and hazardous building materials management, combined with strong organisational and stakeholder engagement skills.

Ideally, you will have:

- Tertiary qualifications in Science, Safety, Occupational Hygiene or a related discipline.
- Three years or more experience in asbestos and/or HBM assessment, remediation and management.
- Experience conducting or supporting multi-site asbestos and HBM assessments and remediation programs.
- Experience in developing and implementing asbestos and other HBM management strategies, including corrective action and risk mitigations.
- Applied knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations, policies and industry standards relating to asbestos, lead and other hazardous building materials.
- Ability to identify and manage issues and constraints associated with the planning and delivery of HBM projects.
- Experience engaging and managing consultants and contractors undertaking field-based asbestos and other HBM works.
- Strong report‑writing and technical review, skills.
- Effective oral communication, negotiation and interpersonal skills needed for managing stakeholders to achieve program/project outcomes.
- Well‑developed organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities.
- Ability to foster teamwork as well as work independently.
- A current driver's licence and Construction Induction White Card.
- Licensed Asbestos Assessor certification will be highly regarded.
- Industry association membership with active participation, or willingness to become involved, will be highly regarded.
