About the role

Hangar 13 is actively seeking a seasoned Principal Mission Designer to join its dynamic team in Brighton, England. This role is pivotal in shaping the core of our new design group, which focuses on creating immersive and engaging mission experiences for players. As a Principal Mission Designer, you will be responsible for crafting complex narratives that intertwine with innovative level designs, mechanics, and memorable characters. Your contributions will significantly impact the overall player experience, ensuring that every mission is not only enjoyable but also narratively rich and thematically coherent.

What you’ll do

- Take ownership of intricate and high-stakes story missions, guiding them from initial concept through to completion and release.
- Design and develop unique mission locations that provide players with memorable experiences, while also pitching and crafting engaging narrative scenarios.
- Utilize Blueprint and a suite of proprietary tools to script complex game logic that enhances gameplay and storytelling.
- Collaborate closely with a diverse team of developers, ensuring that all elements of the in-game experience align with the project’s creative vision and tone.
- Work in tandem with the Mission Design Lead and various stakeholders to establish, document, and uphold efficient workflows, tools, and best practices that enhance team productivity.
- Mentor and onboard both senior and mid-level designers, promoting a culture of continuous improvement, constructive feedback, and adherence to high design standards.
- Analyze and refine mission designs based on player feedback and testing, ensuring that each mission meets quality benchmarks and player expectations.
- Participate in brainstorming sessions and design reviews, contributing innovative ideas that push the boundaries of traditional mission design.




- Stay informed about industry trends and emerging technologies, integrating new ideas into the mission design process to keep our games at the forefront of the market.
- Facilitate regular communication within the team, ensuring that all members are aligned on goals, deadlines, and project milestones.

Requirements

- Demonstrated expertise in design, both conceptually (through documentation) and technically (within the game engine).
- Extensive experience in creating intricate 3D layouts that effectively guide players, communicate gameplay mechanics, and evoke emotional responses.
- Proficient scripting abilities in Blueprint or similar systems, with a knack for troubleshooting and resolving complex technical challenges.
- Excellent collaboration and communication skills, with a history of successfully working with multi‑disciplinary teams across various global locations.
- A proven track record of contributing to multiple high‑profile AAA titles in a Senior or Principal Level/Mission Design role.
- In‑depth, production‑level experience with Unreal Engine, showcasing your ability to leverage its features for mission design.
- Solid organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines effectively.
- A passion for video games and an understanding of player expectations, ensuring that designs resonate with the target audience.

Nice to have

- A solid understanding of narrative development and the ability to create compelling stories that align with the overarching project vision.




- Familiarity with documentation tools and platforms such as Wiki systems or Confluence, enhancing team communication and project tracking.
- A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Game Design or a related field, providing a foundation for your design expertise.
- Experience in open‑world level design, adding another layer of depth to your skill set and approach to mission creation.

- Proficiency in Unreal Engine and its suite of tools for level design and scripting.
- Strong understanding of gameplay mechanics and player psychology, allowing for the creation of engaging and rewarding experiences.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, essential for documenting processes and collaborating with team members.
- Familiarity with project management tools and methodologies, ensuring efficient workflow and project tracking.
- Ability to analyze player feedback and data to inform design decisions and improve mission quality.
- Creative problem‑solving skills, enabling you to navigate challenges and find innovative solutions in mission design.
