About Us

Maptek is the world leader in the development and supply of software and hardware technologies for the mining and resources industry. We create large-scale software products for visualising, processing, and modelling 3D data, including Vulcan, PointStudio, BlastLogic, and GeologyCore. These products are sold and supported worldwide through a network of offices in Australia, North and South America, Africa, and Europe.

The Role

Reporting to the Technical Publications Manager, the Technical Writer is responsible for producing high-quality, technically accurate materials including online help documentation, quick start guides, tutorials, and training materials for multiple software products.

Too often, help documentation is unengaging and unhelpful. Your role is to empathise with our users and create content that is explicit, easy to use, and engaging, and that anticipates and answers users' questions, helping them to perform their tasks efficiently and get the most out of our software.

The day-to-day responsibilities of this position involve the following:

Product understanding & collaboration

- Working closely with product development teams to learn how the software works and keep abreast of changes and new features.
- Liaising with technical services staff to determine what users need to know and how best to present the information.
- Digesting material produced by subject matter experts and reformulating it to meet requirements.

Content creation

- Producing documentation that includes descriptions of technical concepts, instructions, and user workflows, in a variety of formats.
- Supplementing textual content with screenshots, diagrams, animations, and videos, which you will be able to design or construct in collaboration with our design team.
- Structuring documentation at both the high level (topics and sections)

and low level (sentences and paragraphs) to produce an overall document that is self-consistent, logical, well integrated, and palatable to the reader.

Continuous improvement

- Developing strategies to continually improve the usability and completeness of Vulcan help.
- Collaborating with other technical writers on projects to develop new content.
- Participating in peer review to maintain and enhance documentation quality.

About You

You are someone with a strong technical or scientific background who is capable of taking complex or subtle concepts, understanding them thoroughly, and distilling them down into concise, easy-to-follow descriptions and instructions, while ensuring the content is technically accurate and complete. You have an eye for detail, think logically, and derive satisfaction from writing material that concisely and precisely conveys concepts and steps to achieve an outcome.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate the following essential skills and experience:

- Strong written communication skills
- High degree of computer literacy
- University degree in a relevant technical field, such as geology, engineering, science, or communication

Candidates possessing any of the following desirable skills and experience will be viewed favourably:

- Familiarity with Maptek Vulcan or other geological modelling software
- Background or interest in mining engineering, geology, or surveying

- Technical writing experience within a software development environment and familiarity with the software development lifecycle
- Experience with MadCap Flare or similar content authoring tools
- Familiarity with version control and branching and merging concepts with tools such as Git
- Familiarity with CSS, XML, HTML, Python and/or JavaScript
