Primary objective
Provide contemporary vegetation ecology knowledge and contribute to field survey, vegetation classification and Regional
Ecosystem and Landscape Mapping (REALM) activities across the Northern Territory, in collaboration with other team
members.
Context statement
REALM is a Territory-wide program implemented by the Flora and Fauna and Land Resources Divisions.
It integrates
vegetation, soil and landscape information to produce unified ecosystem mapping products that will underpin a wide range
of economic, environmental and land use-planning applications for the Northern Territory.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary scientific team to develop and deliver innovative landscape and ecological
mapping.
2. Contribute to the assessment, classification and description of ecosystems across the Northern Territory under the
guidance of senior staff.
3. Plan and undertake field surveys, including remote fieldwork for the collection of ecological data in accordance with
Northern Territory and Australian survey guidelines, ensuring safe operations within WHS guidelines.
4. Collect, collate and input quality environmental data into corporate databases.
5. Integrate field data with spatial datasets in a geospatial (GIS) workplace to generate mapping products.
6. Collaborate with senior scientists to publish high-quality ecological information, including technical reports and
ecosystem descriptions, in a timely manner.
7. Provide clear written and verbal advice to government agencies, industry groups, land managers and planners to support
sustainable development and land management.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. A relevant scientific degree or equivalent qualification from a recognised tertiary institution.
2. Knowledge of and experience in applying national guidelines,



survey standards and classification systems for assessing
and classifying vegetation.
3. Experience planning and undertaking field-based vegetation surveys using recognised standards, and carrying out
numerical data analysis to define vegetation types from quantitative field data.
4. Experience using spatial data and geographic information systems.
5. Experience preparing high-quality scientific reports and mapping products within project timeframes and program
requirements.
6. Demonstrated experience working effectively independently and in a team, including remote field teams for extended
periods.
7. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both written and orally, with scientific and non-scientific audiences,
including people from diverse cultural backgrounds.
Desirable
1. Knowledge of Northern Territory flora and vegetation communities.
2. Experience carrying out multi-attribute, integrated mapping of vegetation and landscapes in northern Australia.
3. Current manual Driver's Licence and ability to operate a four-wheel drive vehicle in off-road conditions.

program, delivering authoritative vegetation survey, classification and ecosystem mapping.

Landscape mapping products.
2. Lead a team to assess, classify and describe ecosystems within the REALM framework across the Northern Territory.
3. Provide technical leadership to field teams and manage remote field programs, ensuring safe operations and the collection
of high-quality vegetation data in accordance with NT and Australian survey and classification guidelines.
4. Manage and maintain high-quality vegetation and ecological data.
5. Integrate field data with spatial datasets in a geospatial (GIS) environment to generate mapping products.
6. Provide structured mentoring, technical oversight and capability development for other staff, and provide routine expert
advice on vegetation ecology to internal stakeholders.
7. Collaborate with other senior scientists to publish high-quality ecological information, including technical reports and
ecosystem descriptions, in a timely manner.
8. Provide clear written and verbal communication to government agencies, industry groups, land managers and planners
to support sustainable development and land management.
