Role Description
The CMT Laboratory Manager will oversee daily operations, personnel, and compliance within a testing facility.
The Laboratory Manager will direct structural, soil, asphalt, and concrete material evaluations for various projects, ensuring that testing activities and reported results comply with applicable safety, quality, technical and accreditation requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Quality & Compliance: Maintain NATA (National Association of Testing Authorities) accreditation and ensure adherence to ISO/IEC ***** standards
Team Leadership: Manage a team of technicians, provide training, and act as an Approved Signatory to verify technical reports.
Operations & Profitability: Oversee daily lab production, equipment calibration, and client relations
Directing soils laboratory testing and/or field testing in accordance with the Quality Systems
Supervision of the laboratory staff
Review of the Quality manual and Quality control
Ensure that equipment meets test method requirements during the performance of all tests
Ensure that work is verified according to the test method (Australian Standard or equivalent
Identify non-conforming products or processes and notify the client if required
Identify, document, investigate and resolve quality-related issues, including root-cause analysis corrective action and verification of effectiveness.
Conduct investigations into any quality related problems.
Maintain the laboratory management system in accordance with ISO/IEC ***** and applicable NATA criteria, including internal audits,



management reviews, proficiency testing, quality-control programs, equipment calibration and verification, competency records, document control, corrective actions, complaints and control of nonconforming work.
Develop, implement and maintain staff training, competency assessment and authorisation matrices for each laboratory and field test method.
Ensure technicians perform only those activities for which they have been trained assessed as competent and formally authorised.
Conduct witnessed competency assessments and maintain training and competency records suitable for NATA assessment.
Manage laboratory workload, technician utilisation, turnaround times, project budgets, invoicing inputs, equipment expenditure and subcontracted testing while maintaining technical independence and the integrity of test results.
Expected Qualifications & Requirements
Must have had a previous local Construction Material Testing laboratory experience (minimum 10 years) and be an Australian citizen with current driver's license.
Demonstrated experience in earthworks testing and inspection undertaken in accordance with AS ****, including Level 1 inspection and testing, Level 2 testing, lot assessment, frequency allocation, field-density testing, preparation of site records and coordination with the supervising geotechnical engineer.
Strong working knowledge of ISO/IEC *****:****, NATA accreditation requirements and relevant Australian Standards,



including AS ****, AS ****, AS ****, AS ****, AS**** and AS**** together with applicable TfNSW test methods and specifications
Computer skills in Microsoft Office applications and email skills
Self-motivated, able to work with limited supervision
Well organised, able to simultaneously manage several disparate jobs over varying timescales and maintain required schedules
Adaptable, able to comprehend and implement new or infrequently performed test methods with limited specific training and practice.
A robust commitment to safety in the workplace
Physical abilities consistent with the manual handling requirements of sample preparation testing and site duties
Current NSW EPA radiation user licence authorising the use of portable nuclear moisture-density gauges, or an interstate licence eligible for automatic mutual recognition in NSW.
Demonstrated competency in soils and earthworks testing, including moisture content, particle-size distribution, Atterberg limits, compaction, CBR, field density, DCP testing and sampling.
Experience with a Laboratory Information Management System, or LIMS is desirable
Ability to communicate effectively with engineers, contractors, project managers, regulators NATA assessors and clients.
Previous experience as a NATA Authorised Representative, Approved Signatory or technical signatory is highly desirable.
The successful applicant will be expected to demonstrate competency for nomination as an Approved Signatory for the relevant accredited test methods.
