Physics Major.Operate & optimise advanced laser and photonics systemsPerform optical alignment, testing & data analysisSupport R&D;, production uptime & system reliabilityAbout the company/role:This organisation operates at the forefront of advanced laser technology development and commercialisation, based in Lucas Heights.
The Laser Scientist role sits within the technology program, supporting cutting-edge laser systems development.
You will contribute to system integration and photonics development across laser facilities.
This role offers hands-on involvement in R&D;, production support, and technology scale-up within a highly specialised scientific environment.This hands on role would suit an early stage graduate physicist.If you are completing studies, honours/MSc etc, initial part time work can be considered.Key Responsibilities:Operate, maintain, and optimise laser systems and associated support equipmentSet up and align free-space laser transport optics and perform optical engineering tasksSupport technology maturation activities including performance optimisation and reliability improvementsAssist with development of operating procedures, technical documentation, and reportingPerform laboratory measurements, run test campaigns, and analyse dataSupport daily laser facility operations, including start-up and shutdown proceduresMaintain laboratory equipment,



manage optical component inventory, and ensure a safe working environmentProvide general technical and operational support to senior technical staffSkills/experience:Recent BSc / MSc in PhysicsExperience working with laser systems (industry or academia) through honours minimumKnowledge of laser system operation, maintenance, and optical alignment (visible/invisible beams) idealExperience with measurement instruments such as beam profilers, spectrometers, and oscilloscopesData analysis capability using MATLAB, Mathematica, Excel, or similar toolsStrong written and verbal communication skills with a collaborative approachHigh attention to detail, organisation, and ability to manage multiple prioritiesAbility to work autonomously and take ownership of tasks from concept to deliveryAustralian citizenship essential and eligibility to obtain and maintain a national security clearanceCulture/Benefits:Permanent roleWork at the forefront of advanced laser and photonics technologyCollaborate with highly skilled scientists and engineers in a supportive team environmentStrong focus on innovation, continuous improvement, and technical excellenceOpportunities for career development guided by senior technical leadersExposure to complex, real-world applications of cutting-edge scientific technologyPotential for occasional international collaboration and travel opportunities
