We are seeking two Principal Java / Bespoke Software Engineers to join a major Federal Government agency supporting a nationally significant, life-critical operational application.
The platform supports the coordination of critical Australian maritime and aviation response activities and integrates with a range of internal systems, external agencies and operational partners.
This is an outstanding prospect for highly experienced Java engineers to work on a complex, bespoke enterprise environment that directly supports essential government services and emergency response capabilities.

NET developers and subject matter experts.

NET and ArcGIS.
This position will primarily focus on supporting, maintaining and developing the platform's Java, AWS, Oracle and enterprise integration components.
Operating at a Principal Engineer, EL2-equivalent and SFIA Level 6, you will provide technical leadership, lead complex software development activities and drive the adoption of robust software engineering practices and standards.
Key Responsibilities
Design and develop secure, robust and maintainable enterprise software using Java and Oracle technologies
Lead software construction, refactoring and technical improvement activities across a complex bespoke application
Develop and maintain Java back-end components using Java EE, JMS, JPA, Hibernate and Spring Boot
Design and implement REST APIs, SOAP web services and external system integrations
Create and maintain OpenAPI specifications, WSDLs, XML schemas, XSDs, XML and JSON interfaces
Develop AWS-based applications and integrations using EC2, Lambda, API Gateway, S3, SQS and CloudFormation
Design logical and physical data models and implement solutions using Oracle Database and PL/SQL
Implement database CRUD functionality using Java object-relational mapping frameworks
Develop and maintain web-based user interfaces using ReactJS, HTML and CSS
Develop and maintain automated unit, integration and system testing
Build and enhance CI/CD and DevOps workflows using Jenkins, Git, Maven and Ant
Prepare and execute application builds and software releases in accordance with established processes
Produce detailed technical specifications, solution designs, process documentation and support artefacts
Provide senior technical advice to executive stakeholders, application leadership and technology teams
Develop and promote software engineering policies, standards and technical guidelines
Review solution designs and provide technical guidance and feedback to other developers
Participate in a rotating after-hours on-call support roster for critical production incidents
Essential Experience To be successful, you will demonstrate:
A minimum of eight years' commercial Java software development experience
Extensive experience developing complex, enterprise-grade and bespoke software solutions
Strong knowledge of enterprise design patterns, Java EE/JEE, JPA and Hibernate ORM
Strong development experience using Spring and Spring Boot
Experience developing SOAP and REST APIs, Java web services and enterprise integration solutions
Experience working with OpenAPI, WSDL, XML, XSD schemas and JSON
Strong database development experience, including:
Data modelling
Physical database design
Stored procedures
Complex SQL
Oracle Database and PL/SQL
Practical AWS development experience using services such as:
EC2
Lambda
API Gateway
S3
SQS
CloudFormation
Strong experience with Unix/Linux environments and Bash scripting
Experience with Maven lifecycle management, Jenkins, Git, Ant and continuous integration
Experience implementing automated unit, integration and system testing
A strong commitment to software engineering quality, maintainability, documentation and development standards
Demonstrated experience leading software construction and refactoring activities across large or complex projects
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
The ability to communicate complex technical information to executives, technical teams and business stakeholders
Experience with reactive programming, ReactJS, ArcGIS, JMS message processing, highly available applications or life-critical operational systems will be highly regarded.
Principal-Level Expectations This position is aligned to SFIA Programming/Software Development Level 6.
The successful candidate will be expected to:
Plan and lead software construction activities for strategic, large and complex development initiatives
Establish and improve software engineering policies, standards and development guidelines
Develop or adapt engineering methods and organisational capabilities
Drive adherence to agreed technical standards and development practices
Provide authoritative advice on software engineering, solution design and application support
Mentor developers and contribute to senior technical decision‐making
Identify opportunities to improve software quality, maintainability, resilience and delivery processes
On‐call Requirement The application supports critical operational services, and successful candidates must be willing to participate in a 24/7 rotating on‐call roster.
The roster is shared across the development and support team and is structured to accommodate planned leave and availability.
After‐hours escalations to the development team have historically been rare.
However, when rostered on call, you will be responsible for responding to and assisting with critical break‐fix incidents.

Positions available: 2
Client: Federal Government
Initial contract: 12 months
Extension options: 2 x 12 months
Estimated commencement: 1 September ****
Location: Canberra, ACT
Working arrangements: Hybrid, with regular work-from-home arrangements available
Hours: Up to 40 hours per week
Security clearance: Must be able to obtain and maintain an Australian Government Baseline security clearance
Candidates will generally need to be Australian citizens to satisfy Australian Government security clearance requirements.
