Avant Mutual Group is Australia's leading medical defence organisation, providing professional indemnity, personal insurance, financial services and practice solutions to doctors and medical practices across the country.
We are a national, member-owned mutual with approximately 1,050 employees operating nationwide.
As an APRA-regulated organisation, we hold ourselves to a high standard of governance and risk management - and that extends to how we manage the health, safety and wellbeing of our people.
About the role
A recent external review benchmarked Avant's WHS governance against AS/NZS ISO *****:**** and identified 19 recommendations across system architecture, risk management, governance, competence and continual improvement.
Many of the right building blocks already exist — this role is about connecting, consolidating and strengthening them into a fit-for-purpose, 13-section intranet-based WHS Management System.
You'll work alongside an internal working group spanning People & Culture, Risk & Compliance, and Strategy & Risk, in a hands-on, delivery-focused role for someone who knows how to turn a WHS framework into something people actually use.
What You'll Do
Build out Avant's WHSMS intranet structure, turning review recommendations into a functional, accessible system
Develop and finalise policies, procedures, registers, checklists and templates
Integrate WHSMS documentation with Avant's incoming GRC platform, including registers, corrective action trackers and audit schedules
Support the design of hazard identification and risk assessment, operational controls, incident investigation, and internal audit processes
Contribute to WHS governance architecture — responsibility and authority matrix, officer due diligence framework, Board/Executive reporting
Develop and maintain the WHS Legal Register across NSW, VIC, QLD, WA, SA and ACT
Partner with People & Culture, Facilities, Learning & Development and business leaders to keep content grounded in operational reality
Help design and deliver WHS training and communications to embed the new system
What You'll Bring
5+ years in a WHS role, with proven experience building or uplifting management systems
Robust working knowledge of AS/NZS ISO *****:**** and how to apply it without formal certification
Multi-jurisdictional WHS/OHS knowledge, including the Model WHS Act and Victoria's OHS legislation
Experience writing WHS documentation in a professional services, financial services or similarly office-based setting
Experience with psychosocial risk management and current best-practice frameworks
Excellent written communication — documentation that works for a non-WHS audience
Confidence managing multiple workstreams in a complex, stakeholder-rich environment
Nice to have
Experience in or alongside an APRA-regulated organisation
Familiarity with GRC platforms (e.g. Protecht or similar)
Track record communicating WHS system change to senior leaders
Exposure to officer due diligence frameworks under the Model WHS Act
Why Avant
You'll shape a national WHS system from the ground up, in a genuinely inclusive, member-owned organisation that backs the people who support Australia's doctors.
Sydney-based with a ***** hybrid working structure.
