About the role
Mater Health is seeking an experienced and highly skilled Statewide Infection Control Practitioner to join our team in a
permanent full time role
, based at our South Brisbane campus.
This position represents a significant opportunity for an accomplished Infection Control Practitioner looking to lead statewide IPC strategy, provide high-level expert consultancy, and influence system-wide decision-making across a complex and diverse healthcare organisation.
As a senior clinical leader, you will provide expert guidance, consultancy, and strategic oversight of infection prevention and control (IPC) across Mater Health Services statewide.
This critical role spans clinical practice, governance, education, public health collaboration, and research—ensuring Mater remains at the forefront of evidence-based IPC practice and healthcare-associated infection reduction.
As a senior clinical leader, you will play a pivotal role in driving Mater's statewide infection prevention and control strategy, ensuring the consistent delivery of safe, evidence-based practice across all facilities.
Key responsibilities include:
Provide expert infection prevention and control (IPC) consultancy, offering specialist clinical advice and guidance to departments across Mater Hospitals to support protected, evidence-based practice
Lead implementation of best-practice IPC strategies and policies, ensuring consistent, high-quality infection prevention measures across diverse clinical settings
Oversee outbreak management and surveillance activities, including interpreting epidemiological data and escalating emerging risks at local and statewide levels
Ensure timely and accurate reporting of notifiable diseases to Public Health or other Regulatory bodies in alignment with legislation, guidelines, and organisational protocols
Embed IPC principles into capital projects and infrastructure development, advising on design, commissioning, and construction to minimise infection transmission risks




Coordinate statewide application of IPC protocols, collaborating with governance teams to ensure aligned operational delivery and integration of infection prevention strategies, including the development and implementation of statewide documents and processes where applicable
Lead reviews of IPC-related incidents, contributing to system reviews and investigations, and driving system-level improvements to prevent recurrence
About you
You are an accomplished infection prevention and control professional with senior-level expertise, capable of providing authoritative clinical leadership, strategic guidance, and high-level collaboration across a complex healthcare system.
You will bring:
Tertiary qualification in nursing, public health, microbiology, or a related allied health profession
Minimum 5 years' experience in an infection prevention and control role
Postgraduate qualification in Infection Prevention and Control or equivalent (or significant progress toward completion)
Registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
Current C Class Queensland driver's licence (or ability to obtain one) and willingness to travel as required
Participation in on-call or after-hours response arrangements may be required in discussion with line manager
Expert knowledge of infection prevention and control principles, legislation, and national standards (especially NSQHS Standard 3)
Experience providing specialist advice in a complex health environment with multiple stakeholders
Advanced communication and collaboration skills, including the ability to build productive relationships with clinicians, executives, academics, and policymakers
Strong research and analytical abilities,



including the ability to interpret epidemiological data and apply evidence to clinical and policy decisions
