Role Overview
The Practice Nurse (Parental Leave Backfill) provides primary health care services to MDAS clients in both clinic and community settings, delivering culturally safe, high-quality care in accordance with professional nursing standards.
Working collaboratively with GPs, Aboriginal Health Workers, Allied Health Professionals, and other health service providers, the role supports coordinated healthcare delivery, contributes to the clinical development of Aboriginal Health Workers,



and promotes positive health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
The Practice Nurse demonstrates respect for cultural and gender sensitivities, maintains strict client confidentiality, and ensures all clients are treated with dignity, respect, and professionalism.
This is a fixed-term position providing parental leave cover.
Key Responsibilities
• Deliver secure, evidence-based nursing care within Registered Nurse scope, including pathology collection, ECG, immunisation, wound care and spirometry testing.
•Provide clinical services across MDAS approved service centres, including triage, health assessments, chronic disease screening, referrals and preventative care.
• Plan, coordinate and advocate for client care in collaboration with the Clinical Health Coordinator, General Practitioners, Aboriginal health workers and other service providers.
•Deliver client education and community health promotion activities that support prevention, self-management and improved health outcomes.
• Maintain accurate electronic medical records, recalls, reminders, Medicare claims and organisational reporting requirements.
•Mentor and support Aboriginal Health Workers to strengthen team-based care, service delivery, skill development and client follow-up.
•Maintain quality and safety standards through infection control, cold chain management, clinical supplies management, equipment monitoring and safe medication storage/disposal.




•Participate in quality improvement, data collection and service evaluation, and report service gaps to the Clinical Coordinator.
•Uphold MDAS values, cultural respect, quality and risk requirements, occupational health and safety obligations, training, audits and continuous improvement activities.
Skills, Knowledge and Experience
Current Registered Nurse with AHPRA registration and professional indemnity insurance, supported by previous Primary Health Care experience and a strong commitment to inclusive service delivery.
Extensive experience providing comprehensive primary health care, nursing care, case management, and holistic client-centred services in line with best practice standards.
Strong ability to mentor, educate, orientate, and support clinical and non-clinical staff while demonstrating professional leadership and role modelling.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with proven ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams, external agencies, and key stakeholders.
Committed to delivering culturally safe, ethical, and person-centred care that respects individual choice, diversity, and the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
Sound knowledge of Medicare billing, health promotion, workplace health and safety, equal opportunity principles, and Indigenous health and cultural issues.
