About the role
The Aboriginal Health Practitioner role is central to providing culturally grounded, respectful and accessible care for Aboriginal clients attending the Foot Clinic. The position requires strong communication skills and the ability to build trust, rapport and meaningful relationships with Aboriginal clients, families and community members.
Experience in a multidisciplinary health setting is valuable, along with an understanding of chronic disease management, wound care and the social and cultural factors that influence health outcomes for Aboriginal people. The successful applicant will bring a compassionate, organised approach and a commitment to supporting clients to stay engaged with their treatment plans, while advocating for their needs and navigating barriers to care.
The role requires someone who can work confidently on their own while contributing positively within a team. Knowledge of local Aboriginal communities, services and cultural protocols is highly regarded, as is a commitment to ongoing learning and connection with community.
The position is currently 16 hours per week. Working days and hours can be discussed with the successful applicant to support service needs and work-life balance. The role is primarily clinic-based within a supportive multidisciplinary environment.
The High Risk Foot Clinic is a close-knit, supportive multidisciplinary team currently made up of five members. The service is podiatry-led and includes a Diabetes Educator, Dietitian, Allied Health Assistant and Social Worker. The team works collaboratively to support clients with complex foot wounds, diabetes-related complications and other high-risk health needs. There is a strong focus on holistic, patient-centred care and ensuring culturally safe practice for Aboriginal clients and families.




One of the most rewarding aspects of the role is building ongoing relationships with clients and seeing positive outcomes through early intervention, education and culturally safe care. Supporting Aboriginal people to stay connected to their health care and helping prevent hospitalisation or amputation can make a real difference in people's lives.

A typical day may involve supporting clients attending the High Risk Foot Clinic, assisting with wound care and dressing clinics, providing health education and helping clients navigate appointments and referrals. The role also includes advocating for culturally appropriate care, engaging with families and community supports, and working alongside clinicians to improve treatment engagement and outcomes.
There is also opportunity to participate in case discussions, care planning and community outreach where appropriate. No two days are exactly the same, which keeps the role varied and rewarding.
The successful applicant will work closely with the podiatrist and wider multidisciplinary team, including the Diabetes Educator, Dietitian, Social Worker and Allied Health Assistant. There will also be regular collaboration with GPs, vascular teams, infectious diseases, Aboriginal health services and community-based supports to ensure coordinated care for clients.
The successful applicant will receive orientation to the clinic, local health services and relevant systems and processes. Ongoing support will be provided by the multidisciplinary team, with opportunities for mentoring, clinical learning and professional development.
