Task & responsibilities
Interpreting construction plans, drawings, and technical specifications to calculate material quantities, confirm required dimensions, and determine appropriate masonry and installation methods.
Assess and select suitable stone materials according to project requirements. Laying stones or bricks accurately in straight courses, decorative patterns, specified designs, and structural shapes while applying mortar evenly between joints. Positioning bricks, blocks, and stones firmly into mortar beds, adjusting them as required, and removing excess mortar to achieve clean and consistent joints.
Regularly checking vertical and horizontal alignment using appropriate measuring and levelling tools to ensure that masonry work is straight, level, plumb, and completed to the required dimensions. Cutting, shaping, dressing, and polishing stones using wet saws fitted with diamond blades and circular saws with water-feed systems, including modifying materials to fit corners,
openings, curves, and irregular spaces. Prepare sandstone products for landscaping applications including pavers, wall blocks and cladding.
Shape, dress and finish stone using masonry tools including mallets, hammers, point chisels and pitching chisels. Produce textured and decorative finishes on stone surfaces using specialised bush hammer machinery. Safely move, load and position heavy stone materials using cranes, forklifts and other lifting equipment.
Inspect finished stone products to ensure accuracy, quality and compliance with project specifications. Maintain a clean and organised work area and follow workplace health and safety procedures. Designing, measuring, cutting, shaping, and finishing monumental masonry, including preparing stone memorials and accurately carving or applying decorative lettering.
Constructing strong and durable walls and structural features using stone slabs, large masonry blocks, and similar materials while maintaining the specified bond, alignment, stability, and finish.
Qualification & experience
Relevant trade qualification in Stonemasonry.
Work experience of 3-4 years.
Demonstrated experience in cutting, shaping and preparing natural stone products.
Ability to interpret technical drawings, plans and templates.
Experience using stone cutting equipment and masonry hand tools.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality workmanship.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Valuable communication and organisational skills.
