Lead the team. Shape the culture. Drive the store.
Full-time | Tuesday to Saturday
Art Shed is looking for an experienced, people-focused
Store Manager
to lead our Brisbane store through an exciting period of growth and positive change.
We're not looking for someone who can simply write a roster, open the doors and make sure the shelves are full. We're looking for a
retail leader
.
Someone who knows how to build a capable, accountable and genuinely happy team. Someone who can set high standards without sucking the joy out of the room. Someone who is comfortable having the easy conversations, the awkward conversations and, occasionally, the conversations everyone else has been avoiding.
You'll work closely with our Company Directors and wider management team to help shape the next chapter of Art Shed Brisbane, while protecting the warmth, creativity and slightly unconventional spirit that makes Art Shed, well... Art Shed.
You'll lead from the front, be visible on the floor and create the kind of store where customers walk in for one tube of paint and somehow emerge an hour later with six new ideas and a basket full of possibilities. That's the Art Shed effect.
About Art Shed
Art Shed is an Australian art supplies retailer with stores in
Brisbane and Melbourne
, supported by a national online business.
We've been around for more than 20 years and have built our business around a fairly simple idea:
Art shops should be exciting.
They should be welcoming, colourful, inspiring and full of people who genuinely want to help.
Our team includes artists, makers and creative humans who love sharing what they know. You absolutely don't need to be an artist to lead our Brisbane store, although if you've ever lost an afternoon to a creative project, we'll probably understand each other.
Our culture is warm, welcoming, creative and occasionally a little cheeky. We take customer service and business performance very seriously.
Ourselves? Slightly less so.
We want everyone who walks through our doors, or lands on our website, to feel a little like a
kid in a candy store
. That sense of wonder, possibility and I want to try that! is at the heart of our brand.
And while we love colour, creativity and fun, underneath it all we are serious about building a great business and a excellent place to work.
Many of our team members have been with us for more than 15 years, something we're incredibly proud of.
We encourage ideas, challenge the occasional sacred cow and believe the best businesses keep learning.
The role
Reporting directly to the
Managing Director
, you'll take ownership of the day-to-day performance and operation of our Brisbane store.
And there's plenty to get your teeth into.
Art Shed Brisbane is entering an important period of positive change. New systems, clearer expectations,
stronger processes and a renewed focus on the culture and customer experience we want to create.
You won't be doing that alone.
You'll work closely with the Company Directors and other Managers to introduce changes thoughtfully, explain the why behind them and help the team feel part of where we're going.
Because change needs more than a checklist.
It needs a leader who can bring people with them.
Someone who communicates clearly, listens properly, earns trust and still knows when it's time to draw a line in the sand.
This is also very much a
hands-on retail leadership role
.
You'll be on the floor. You'll talk to customers. You'll coach people in the moment. You'll notice when something isn't working and do something about it.
If your preferred management style involves disappearing into an office and emerging occasionally to check the roster, this probably isn't your gig.
People, culture & leadership -This is a big one.
We care enormously about the culture of our stores, so strong practical people-management and HR experience is essential.
You'll:
Lead, coach and develop an engaged, capable and accountable retail team.
Build a workplace that is fun, respectful, supportive and high-performing.
Recruit and induct people who genuinely fit the Art Shed brand and values.
Set clear expectations and make sure policies and procedures are consistently followed.
Give regular feedback and coaching rather than saving everything for performance-review day.
Address conduct, attendance and performance concerns promptly, fairly and professionally.
Manage workplace conflict calmly and constructively.
Work closely with the Managing Director and HR on more complex employment matters.
Spot potential future leaders and help them grow.
Prepare rosters in advance and balance great customer service with approved wage budgets.
We're looking for someone who can be
kind without being vague, approachable without being a pushover and accountable without becoming Captain Clipboard
.
Sometimes leadership means celebrating a brilliant week.
Sometimes it means having a difficult conversation on a Wednesday morning.
You need to be comfortable with both.
Customers, sales & the candy-store effect
Our customers range from complete beginners nervously buying their first set of paints to professional artists who know precisely which obscure pigment they need. They all matter.
You'll:
Lead the team in delivering warm, knowledgeable and memorable customer experiences.
Make sure beginners, professionals and everyone in between feel equally welcome.
Set and maintain consistently high service standards.
Resolve complaints, returns and tricky customer situations professionally.
Drive sales, customer engagement, average transaction value and loyalty participation.
Review store results and turn numbers into practical action.
Help the team understand their targets, KPIs and what they can actually do to influence them.
We don't do snobby art-store energy.
No customer should ever feel silly for asking a question.
Running the store
Behind all the colour and creativity, a great retail store needs to run like a well‐oiled machine.
You'll take ownership of:
Opening, closing, keyholder, banking and security responsibilities.
Financial administration, timesheets and reporting.
Stock receipt, replenishment, stocktakes and inventory accuracy.
Stock loss, shrinkage and negative stock-on-hand.
Keeping the stockroom safe, organised and functional.
Coordinating with suppliers, contractors and service providers when required.
Ensuring company policies and Work Health and Safety requirements are followed.
Making sure the right people are in the right places at the right times.
Basically, we want the magic out front without chaos out back.
Making the store look brilliant
Art supplies are inherently glorious things. Rows of colour. Brushes. Paper. Pens. Paint. Canvas.
Our job is not to make them boring.
You'll:
Maintain an exceptionally clean, organised, welcoming and well‐stocked store.
Oversee visual merchandising, promotional displays, signage and ticketing.
Make sure campaigns and promotions hit the floor accurately and on time.
Work closely with our Marketing, Purchasing and eCommerce teams.
Identify opportunities for demonstrations, events and community engagement.
Look for ways to make the store easier, more exciting and more inspiring to shop.
We want customers wandering around thinking,
"I didn't even know I needed that."
Who we're looking for
You'll need:
At least
three years' experience in retail management
.
Demonstrated experience leading and developing a retail team.
Strong practical HR and people-management capability.
Experience with recruitment, induction, coaching, performance management, conflict resolution and policy compliance.
Confidence addressing difficult behaviour and performance issues fairly and promptly.
Experience managing rosters, wage budgets, leave and staffing requirements.
Strong commercial awareness and a proven ability to drive sales and achieve targets.
Experience with stock control, merchandising, shrinkage prevention and general store operations.
The ability to interpret sales and financial reports and turn them into action.
