About the
Role:
Townsville City
Council is seeking a Cyber Security Operations Officer to join our
Cyber Security team.
This
hands-on operational role focuses on monitoring, investigating and
responding to cyber security alerts and events across Council's
technology environment. Working closely with Council's managed
security service providers and Cyber Security Engineer, you will
act as the first internal escalation point for cyber security
incidents, support threat hunting activities, and contribute to the
continual improvement of Council's cyber security
posture.
You
will play a key role in maintaining cyber hygiene through
vulnerability management, assisting with security audits, and
providing first-level support for cyber security service requests
and enquiries from across the council.
Key
Responsibilities
Monitor,
analyse and investigate cyber security alerts, events and
incidents from SIEM, endpoint protection, identity, network and
cloud security platforms.
Act as the
primary internal escalation point for security alerts and
incidents raised by Council's managed security service
providers.
Identify,
assess, triage and respond to cyber security threats and
security incidents in accordance with Council's Incident
Response processes.
Review logs and
security telemetry from multiple sources and prepare technical
incident reports and recommendations.
Support threat
hunting, incident investigations and security monitoring
activities alongside the Cyber Security Engineer.
Coordinate
vulnerability identification, remediation tracking and
reporting in collaboration with technology teams.
Assist with
security reviews, auditing activities and control assessments
to identify cyber security risks, compliance gaps and
opportunities for improvement.
Assist with the
implementation,



monitoring and continual improvement of
security controls and operational processes.
Provide
first-level support and advice for cyber security service
requests, enquiries and tickets.
Contribute to
cyber security awareness initiatives and promote security best
practices across Council.
About
you:
Relevant
tertiary qualifications in Cyber Security, Information Systems
or similar, with postgraduate studies highly
regarded.
At least 5
years' IT experience, including 3 years in cyber or information
security.
Industry
certifications such as CISM, CISA, GIAC GSEC or OSCP
(desirable).
Experience
working with security frameworks and standards, including ISO
***** and the ACSC Essential Eight.
Strong
knowledge of cyber security principles, risk management
practices and security controls.
Proven ability
to investigate security incidents, assess risk and communicate
business impacts and treatment strategies.
Excellent
communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the
ability to work effectively across technical and non-technical
teams.
Strong
analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to
identify risks and implement practical security
solutions.
