Principal Software Engineer (EL2 equivalent)
APG Workforce are seeking an experienced Principal Software Engineer (EL2 equivalent) to support and enhance a life‐critical application used in national search and rescue operations based in ACT.
Location: ACT (Hybrid – WFH flexibility)
Start: ASAP
12 months + 12 month extension
Hours: Up to 40 hours per week
Clearance: Baseline Security Clearance required
About the Role
You will play a key role in supporting and developing NEXUS, a mission‐critical system used by the Rescue Coordination Centre Australia (RCCA) to coordinate maritime and aviation search and rescue incidents, as well as pollution response activities. Working within a highly skilled team, you will contribute to the ongoing development, maintenance, and optimisation of complex cloud‐based and back‐end systems.
What You'll Do
Build and maintain enterprise Java applications
Work across AWS (Lambda, S3, API Gateway, SQS)




Develop APIs (REST/SOAP)
Design and manage Oracle databases
Contribute to CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, Maven, Git)
Support releases + system improvements
Join a small, high‐performing team
Requirements
8+ years Java experience (Spring / Hibernate)
Solid AWS + API development
Solid Oracle / data modelling skills
Experience in enterprise / gov environments
Ability to obtain Baseline clearance
Additional Information
Hybrid working arrangement with flexibility
On-call support required (rare escalations, approx. once per year)
One-page pitch required addressing selection criteria (SFIA Level 6)
