Location: Sydney, Australia Employment Type: Permanent About the Role We are seeking an experienced Staff Engineer – Backend Services to join a high-performing engineering team in Sydney.
This is an exciting opportunity for a senior backend qualified who is passionate about building scalable, cloud-native applications and driving engineering excellence using modern technologies.
As a Staff Engineer, you will play a key role in designing, developing, and delivering robust backend solutions while collaborating with cross-functional teams in an Agile environment.
Key Responsibilities Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend applications using Java and Spring Boot .
Build and enhance RESTful APIs , event-driven systems, and microservices .
Develop workflow orchestration solutions using Temporal , AWS Step Functions , or Flink .
Build and deploy cloud-native applications on AWS Implement secure, scalable, and high-performance solutions following engineering best practices.
Develop and maintain CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions .
Manage containerized applications with Docker and Kubernetes .
Monitor system performance using CloudWatch , observability, and monitoring tools.
Ensure application quality through unit, integration, and automated testing.
Work closely with product owners, architects, and engineering squads to deliver high-quality software.
Explore and implement emerging AI technologies where appropriate.
Required Skills & Experience Technical Skills Strong experience with Java Core and Spring Boot Expertise in REST APIs , Kafka , Event Streaming , and Microservices Architecture Experience with workflow orchestration tools such as Temporal , AWS Step Functions , or Apache Flink Hands-on experience with AWS services, including: Bedrock Lambda S3 IAM CloudFront Experience with Docker and Kubernetes Strong understanding of GitHub Actions , CI/CD pipelines, Vault, and Certificate Management Experience with monitoring and observability tools such as CloudWatch Knowledge of security, compliance, governance, and Responsible AI principles Soft Skills Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities Ability to mentor engineers and drive engineering best practices Experience working in Agile/Scrum environments
