1. Position Purpose
The Phlebotomist is responsible for the safe, accurate, and timely collection of blood and other clinical specimens from patients, in accordance with hospital, laboratory, and accreditation standards. The role ensures compliance with infection prevention, occupational health and safety legislation, and quality management systems to support accurate diagnostic testing and patient care.
2. Key Responsibilities
Perform venipuncture, capillary, arterial (if trained/authorised), and other specimen collections in line with standard operating procedures (SOPs).
Verify patient identity using approved identifiers in compliance with hospital and NPAAC (National Pathology Accreditation Advisory Council) standards.
Label and handle all specimens to maintain chain of custody, traceability, and sample integrity.
Qualifications and Compliance Requirements
Certificate III/IV in Pathology Collection or equivalent recognised qualification.
Demonstrated clinical competency in phlebotomy and specimen handling.
Knowledge of NPAAC guidelines, NATA accreditation requirements, and ISO ***** standards.
Current First Aid and CPR certification.
Compliance with hospital credentialing, immunisation, and infection prevention requirements (e.g., Hepatitis B immunity, annual flu vaccination, COVID-19 vaccination as mandated).
