A little bit about you
You're an experienced in-house or private practice lawyer who thrives on managing a varied caseload independently, balancing legal rigour with commercial pragmatism. You bring sound judgement, strong stakeholder skills and genuine alignment with the Society's mission and values.
Bachelor of Laws, Juris Doctor or equivalent, with current admission and a Victorian practising certificate (or eligibility to obtain one)
At least six years' post-admission legal experience, gained in-house, in private practice or a combination of both
Substantial experience drafting, reviewing and negotiating complex commercial contracts
Experience across several of the following areas: property and leasing, construction, community housing, procurement, technology, privacy, employment, disputes or regulatory compliance
Experience advising senior executives and preparing papers for Boards or governance bodies
Experience in a not-for-profit, faith-based or community services environment is desirable but not essential
About the role
St Vincent de Paul Society Victoria is seeking a Deputy General Counsel to provide high-quality, practical and commercially focused legal advice across the Society and related Group entities, including VincentCare Victoria and VincentCare Community Housing. Reporting to the Chief Legal and Governance Officer,



you'll independently manage a broad portfolio of legal matters, including commercial contracting, procurement, property and leasing, construction and community housing, privacy and data protection, technology, regulatory compliance, employment and disputes.
You'll partner closely with leaders across the Group to manage legal risk, enable timely decision-making and support services that advance the Society's mission, while also supporting the CLGO on strategic, sensitive and Board-level matters.

Key responsibilities
Provide timely, practical, risk-based legal advice across the Group, independently managing matters from instruction through to resolution
Draft, review and negotiate a broad range of commercial agreements, including procurement, funding, technology and supplier contracts
Advise on property, leasing, construction and community housing matters, including due diligence and capital projects
Provide legal advice on regulatory obligations, including privacy, data protection, charities and consumer law, and support responses to compliance concerns
Build trusted relationships with Executive leaders and stakeholders and support the CLGO with Board and Committee papers and governance advice
Develop legal precedents,



playbooks and knowledge resources to strengthen consistency and legal capability across the Group
