Profectus is seeking expressions of interest from experienced engineers to build, administer, and provide senior escalation support for secure Windows and Linux platforms in virtualised environments across Australian Government clients. You will work as part of a small, high-trust engineering team sustaining production systems and their supporting development environments, while contributing to ongoing feature development, automation, and configuration control. The scope is deliberately broad. We are equally interested in candidates from systems administration, network engineering, and cloud or virtualisation infrastructure backgrounds. If you have designed and built environments and want to stay close to the technology, much of the work will be familiar: configuration baselines, automated builds, monitoring, and platform and network troubleshooting, delivered inside a governed and secure environment.
Key Responsibilities
Act as a senior escalation point for the diagnosis and resolution of complex platform and network incidents within agreed service levels
Replicate reported faults and develop, test, and verify resolutions
Perform system and network monitoring, and assess configuration compliance across the environment
Write and maintain scripts and automation to support system builds, application installation, configuration, and customisation
Support system builds, updates, upgrades, and the release of additional features and functionality
Support the configuration and maintenance of network devices within the environment
Administer and maintain support and development environments
Baseline and maintain system configuration control, and document setting and network design changes
Develop and maintain standard operating procedures, build and load instructions, and other technical documentation
Contribute to training material development and transfer knowledge to support personnel
Provide surge support for onsite activities as required
Provide technical advice that accounts for broader business and operational requirements
Required Experience
Demonstrated system administration and customisation experience across both Linux and Windows servers and applications
Demonstrated scripting and automation capability using Python, PowerShell, or UNIX shells, applied to installation, configuration, and repeatable build processes
Experience working within virtualised or private cloud infrastructure
Working knowledge of network fundamentals, including routing, switching, firewalls, and the configuration of network devices
Sound fault-finding and diagnostic skills on issues escalated beyond frontline support, including working through incident management systems and toolsets
Experience developing and maintaining SOPs, build and load instructions, and technical documentation
Experience applying DevOps methodologies within a delivery team
Ability to operate effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative engineering team
Strong written communication skills and the ability to engage technical and non-technical stakeholders
A growth mindset and willingness to build capability across unfamiliar technologies
Software development experience on Linux and/or Windows platforms
Infrastructure as code and configuration management using tooling such as Ansible, Git, and comparable platforms
Experience with OpenStack, or with other virtualisation and private cloud platforms
Experience designing, architecting, or migrating infrastructure, network, or cloud environments
Experience with bespoke Windows and Linux standard operating environments (SOE)
Network, virtualisation, or cloud certifications
Experience with Jira or comparable incident and work management toolsets
ITIL v4 experience or certification
Understanding of systems engineering processes and the capability lifecycle
Experience supporting systems operating in distributed, remote, or field-based environments
Experience working within an agile delivery framework
Relevant tertiary qualifications or industry certifications in a related discipline
Security Clearance Requirements
Must be an Australian Citizen
Must hold a current AGSVA NV2 Security Clearance
Working Arrangements
Onsite in Canberra (ACT)
No flexible, remote working or hybrid arrangements possible
