The Position
Austin Health seeks to appoint an exceptional operational leader as General Manager (Operations) Pathology. This is a significant senior leadership opportunity within a specialised public pathology service that supports metropolitan, regional and community healthcare across Victoria. The role combines operational leadership, commercial acumen and organisational influence, ensuring the delivery of safe, efficient and high‐quality pathology services in an increasingly complex and evolving healthcare environment.
Working in close partnership with the Medical Director Pathology, the General Manager provides strategic and operational leadership across laboratory operations, business services, workforce capability, financial performance and service improvement. Austin Health Pathology is a service of considerable scale encompassing multiple pathology disciplines, regional laboratories, outreach services and external client relationships, supported by approximately 500 FTE and operating within a sector undergoing ongoing reform and network change. A key priority will be strengthening operational performance, maintaining service reliability, leading organisational change and ensuring the service continues to deliver high‐quality, patient‐centred and financially sustainable outcomes.




The successful candidate will be a highly credible pathology operations leader with experience managing a large pathology laboratory or similarly complex diagnostic service. They will bring strong financial and commercial capability, together with a deep understanding of pathology operations, quality systems, accreditation requirements and service delivery expectations. Team-oriented, practical and outcomes‐focused, the appointee will build strong partnerships across medical, scientific and operational leadership groups, foster a positive and high‐performing culture, and provide the leadership required to navigate change while strengthening capability, performance and service quality across the organisation.
