Melwood Joinery
Hobart
We're a growing joinery and commercial carpentry company with something to prove. We've got the skills, the vision and the ambition to become one of the most respected joinery teams in the industry — and we're building that culture right now.
Our recent pipeline includes Telstra's flagship Melbourne CBD store, hotel fit-outs, retail spaces, schools and office environments. Current machinery is arriving this year, our lean transformation is delivering real results, and our team is evolving.
We're not a traditional factory. We're collaborative, results-driven, and we invest in our people as much as we invest in our processes.
THE ROLE
We're looking for a Joinery Set Out / Drafter to join our team at our Braeside factory — someone as comfortable behind AutoCAD and Microvellum as they are on the phone to an architect.
You'll turn architectural drawings into accurate, buildable joinery shop drawings and construction drawings, and work closely with our production and project management teams to keep every job moving from design to delivery.
What you'll actually do:
Interpret architectural drawings and translate them into detailed joinery shop and construction drawings
Liaise directly with architects and builders to resolve design and documentation questions
Liaise with production and project management to meet project requirements
Work with the factory team to design more efficient, buildable construction methods
Coordinate with the manufacturing team ahead of site installation
Process drawings in line with site measurements provided by project management
Contribute to and help build out our Microvellum libraries
Drive ongoing efficiencies within the drafting function
ABOUT YOU
You've got previous experience with AutoCAD and Microvellum — this is essential. You've got a very keen eye for detail and take real pride in getting drawings right the first time. You're a confident communicator, comfortable liaising with architects, builders and the factory floor, and you work well as part of a team.
You've got a lean mindset — curious about how things work and how they could work better, open to new ways of doing things, and willing to help improve them.
Previous experience with AutoCAD and Microvellum
Strong drawing interpretation skills and a keen eye for detail
Confident communicator, comfortable liaising with architects and builders
Ability to produce accurate material lists and construction documentation
Ideal:
Experience in commercial joinery, office fit-outs or education-sector projects
Experience working closely with a production or factory team
Background in continuous improvement or lean initiatives
WHAT YOU GET
Competitive salary, based on experience
Modern factory and office space with brand-new, state-of-the-art machinery
Training and upskilling opportunities
A team invested in doing good work
Genuine career progression as the business grows
WHY MELWOOD
We're 18 months into our lean journey. The factory looks different, the flow is better, our processes are tighter and our standards are clearer — and we're just getting started. We've got major projects locked in across schools, offices, hotels and retail, and we're investing in new machinery to match.
We want a workplace where the team knows what they're working toward, quality means something, and improvement is everyone's job.
