Senior medical leadership position across clinical governance, operations and strategy
Shape the future of pathology in a dynamic and evolving healthcare environment
The Position
Austin Health seeks to appoint an outstanding senior medical leader as Medical Director Pathology. This is a rare opportunity to lead a major public pathology service that supports Austin Health, regional health services and community‐based care across Victoria. Sitting within the Chief Medical Officer portfolio, the role combines clinical leadership, organisational influence and strategic responsibility in a service recognised for its scale, complexity, teaching and research capability.
Reporting to the Chief Medical Officer, the Medical Director provides leadership across a broad pathology network encompassing multiple clinical disciplines, regional partnerships, external client relationships and significant teaching and research activity. Working in close partnership with the General Manager (Operations), the role is responsible for clinical governance, service performance, workforce capability and strategic development, ensuring the pathology service remains well positioned amidst evolving healthcare demand and ongoing pathology reform. A key priority will be building confidence across the pathology disciplines, strengthening governance and performance, and supporting the next phase of service development and innovation.
The successful candidate will be a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia and a highly respected pathology leader with the clinical credibility, governance expertise and organisational capability to lead a complex public pathology service. They will bring deep experience in pathology operations, accreditation, risk management and service leadership, together with the ability to influence across diverse stakeholder groups. Team-oriented, pragmatic and calm under pressure, the appointee will combine strategic perspective with operational judgement, foster strong partnerships with clinicians, scientists and executive leaders, and provide confident leadership through a period of change and opportunity.
