Blue Cross Animals Society of Victoria is seeking an
experienced Animal Attendant
to join our shelter team on a casual basis.
This role is
not suitable for entry-level applicants
. We are looking for someone with proven, hands‐on experience working with
dogs and cats
, who demonstrates strong awareness, safe handling practices, and a willingness to learn within a structured shelter environment.
About the Role
As an Animal Attendant, you will be responsible for providing a consistently high standard of daily care to animals within our shelter, including
dogs and cats of varying sizes, temperaments, and needs
. Duties include hands‐on animal husbandry, feeding, cleaning, exercise, enrichment, and close observation of animal health and behaviour in accordance with established shelter procedures.
You will be expected to demonstrate
safe and humane handling
, solid situational awareness, and sound judgement
within defined guidelines
, particularly when working with animals that may be anxious or stressed in the shelter environment. This role involves working both independently and as part of a team, with routine supervision and support.
This is a
physically active, hands‐on role
requiring confidence, emotional resilience, and the ability to work effectively in a busy shelter. Availability across weekdays, weekends,
and some public holidays is required.
Essential Requirements (please read carefully)
Applicants must have:
Demonstrated experience handling dogs (essential)
Experience handling cats (essential)
A sound understanding of animal behaviour and body language
Strong awareness of safety, hygiene, and animal welfare
The ability to follow procedures, take direction, and show initiative in routine tasks
Emotional resilience and the ability to work under pressure
Confidence communicating with staff, volunteers, and members of the public
Applications without relevant animal handling experience will not be considered.
Desirable (but not essential)
Certificate II in Animal Care or equivalent experience
Experience in a shelter, kennel, boarding, veterinary, or animal care facility
Employment Conditions
Casual position under the Animal Care & Veterinary Services Award ****
Casual hourly rate includes 25% casual loading
Minimum 3-hour engagement per shift
Weekend and public holiday penalties apply in accordance with the Award
