Position Summary
The Workshop Manager is responsible for overseeing all workshop and production activities related to the manufacture, assembly, testing, and dispatch of automation systems and gas drainage equipment.
This role ensures work is executed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with engineering specifications, quality standards, and delivery commitments.
The Workshop Manager leads workshop personnel, coordinates with engineering, supply chain, and project teams, and maintains high standards of workmanship, safety, and accountability in an engineered-to-order manufacturing environment.
Tasks
Key Responsibilities
1) Workshop Operations & Production Management
Plan, schedule, and supervise daily workshop activities to meet production targets and delivery schedules
Manage the assembly, fabrication, wiring, and integration of gas drainage systems, control panels, skids, and associated equipment
Ensure all work is performed in accordance with approved drawings, procedures, and specifications
Allocate resources (labour, equipment, tooling) effectively across multiple jobs and priorities
Monitor work progress and address bottlenecks or issues proactively
2) Safety & Compliance
Enforce strict adherence to workplace health and safety requirements, including:
Hazardous area practices
Lockout/tagout
Pressure systems safety
Electrical and mechanical safety
Ensure compliance with applicable standards and regulations (e.g. MSHA, ATEX, IECEx, NEC, AS/NZS, ISO)
Conduct toolbox talks, safety briefings,



and incident investigations
Foster a strong safety-first culture within the workshop
3) Quality Control & Testing
Ensure high standards of workmanship and quality throughout manufacturing and assembly
Oversee inspection, testing, and verification activities, including:
Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT)
Pressure and leak testing
Functional testing of control and automation systems
Ensure non-conformances are identified, documented, and resolved
Support continuous improvement of quality processes and work instructions
4) Leadership & Team Management
Lead, supervise, and mentor workshop staff, including:
Tradespeople (fitters, electricians, welders)
Technicians and apprentices
Set clear expectations for performance, safety, and quality
Support skills development, training, and competency tracking
Conduct performance reviews and manage attendance, discipline, and engagement
5) Cross-Functional Coordination
Work closely with engineering to clarify drawings, resolve design issues, and implement changes
Coordinate with procurement and stores to ensure materials and components are available when needed
Liaise with project managers and sales to support delivery commitments and schedule changes
Participate in production planning, job kick-off, and post-job review meetings
6) Documentation & Reporting
Ensure accurate completion of production records, test reports, and quality documentation
Maintain workshop records, including job travellers, inspection checklists, and certifications
Provide regular updates on production status, risks, and resource needs to management
Support audits (internal, customer, and regulatory)
7) Continuous Improvement
Identify opportunities to improve workshop efficiency, safety, and quality
Support standardization of work practices, layouts, and tooling
Contribute to lean manufacturing, 5S, and continuous improvement initiatives
Assist with workshop layout planning and equipment upgrades
Requirements
Required Qualifications
1) Education & Trade Background
Trade qualification in Electrical, Mechanical,



or Fabrication discipline
Additional technical or supervisory qualifications preferred
2) Experience
7+ years of experience in:
Industrial manufacturing or workshop environments
Assembly and testing of engineered systems or skids
5+ years in a supervisory or workshop management role
Experience with gas handling, pressure systems, or hazardous area equipment strongly preferred
Background in mining, oil & gas, or heavy industrial OEM environments is highly desirable
3) Technical Skills
Strong understanding of:
Gas drainage systems or fluid handling equipment
Electrical and control panel assembly
Mechanical assembly, piping, and pressure systems
Ability to interpret engineering drawings, P&IDs;, wiring schematics, and specifications
Knowledge of industrial standards, hazardous area classifications, and quality systems
4) Software & Systems
Production planning or ERP systems (MRP Easy)
Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word)
Familiarity with quality and inspection documentation systems (ISO ****)

Work Environment
Full-time, on-site role in an industrial workshop environment
Exposure to noise, machinery, and industrial hazards (with appropriate controls and PPE)
