About the role
Optiver is on the lookout for an experienced leader to head its Global Observability Platform. This pivotal role involves enhancing the observability across our global trading operations. The successful candidate will be responsible for shaping the strategy and architecture of our observability capabilities, ensuring they are robust, scalable, and seamlessly integrated into our existing systems. You will lead a geographically distributed engineering team and work closely with various stakeholders to improve the quality and consistency of observability practices at Optiver.

What you'll do
- Formulate and execute the overarching strategy, architecture, and roadmap for the observability platform at Optiver.
- Lead and mentor a geographically distributed engineering team, setting clear objectives and operational standards.
- Establish and enforce standards for effective observability, emphasizing the quality of telemetry, instrumentation, and alerting mechanisms.
- Oversee the technical strategy for telemetry collection, storage solutions, visualization techniques, and automation processes.
- Improve the platform's reliability, scalability, and performance in response to increasing usage and data volumes.
- Enhance the developer and operator experience by creating self-service tools and producing thorough documentation.
- Collaborate with various engineering teams to drive the adoption of the observability platform across the organization.
- Analyze and address potential gaps in observability practices,



ensuring alignment with industry standards and best practices.
- Facilitate cross-functional discussions to gather feedback and continuously improve observability initiatives.
- Monitor industry trends and emerging technologies to keep Optiver's observability practices at the forefront of innovation.
- Champion a culture of observability within the organization, promoting its importance to all stakeholders.
- Report on the effectiveness of observability initiatives and provide insights for continuous improvement.
Requirements
- Extensive experience in leading engineering, Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), platform, infrastructure, or observability teams in complex technical environments.
- Demonstrated success in defining and developing platform capabilities, including strategic direction, roadmaps, and governance frameworks.
- Comprehensive understanding of contemporary observability practices, including logs, metrics, traces, and alerting systems.
- Proven experience in designing and implementing large-scale observability platforms, with a focus on data ingestion, storage, and visualization.
- Robust leadership qualities, technical acumen, and a disciplined approach to project delivery.
- Ability to influence and collaborate effectively across engineering teams, even without direct authority.




- A balanced viewpoint on the need for global standardization versus the flexibility of regional autonomy in platform adoption.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, to convey complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.
- A proactive mindset, with the ability to identify and solve problems efficiently.
Nice to have
- Experience with agent-based workflows and advanced telemetry systems that enhance observability capabilities.
- Familiarity with machine learning techniques applied to observability data for predictive insights.
- Knowledge of compliance and security considerations related to observability practices.
Skills & tools
- Proficient in using observability tools and platforms, including telemetry pipelines, dashboards, and alerting systems.
- Experience with cloud infrastructure services and data storage solutions, particularly in a trading context.
- Familiarity with programming languages and scripting for automation, tooling, and integration purposes.
- Understanding of containerization and orchestration technologies, such as Docker and Kubernetes.
