Position Information
St George Hospital School is a NSW Department of Education School for Specific Purposes. The school currently operates from two locations occupying a classroom within the Paediatric Ward of St George Hospital, Kogarah NSW and also an Outreach Class, located within the grounds of Arncliffe West Infants School. The school provides educational support to students from Kindergarten - Year 12 from all educational sectors who are inpatients at the hospital and those who have experienced extended periods of disengagement from their census school and who require extended educational support for re-engagement and transition support.
The school has a solid sense of working with the community, forming significant partnerships with families, South Eastern Sydney Local Health District, local NSW Department of Education schools, allied health professionals, other educational sectors and external service providers. These partnerships are imperative and form the basis for student's learning continuity, achievement, sense of connection and success.
This valued APLaS teaching position will be based at St George Hospital School Outreach site and an integral part of Student Wellbeing Support - Team Around a School.
The St George Hospital School Outreach Class is a unique program designed to provide intensive support for ten students from Years 7 to 10, referred from DoE schools who have encountered barriers to regular school attendance due to internalised mental health challenges and/or trauma. Placement is offered for two terms with ongoing review processes in place. Each student has a Personalised Learning Plan to support increased engagement, the continuity of learning, wellbeing and a sense of connection. Staff are committed to fostering a nurturing and inclusive environment where every student feels valued and supported.



The goal is to ensure continuous and increased educational engagement is achieved through tailored, compassionate and effective teaching methods.
The program serves as a short-term tutorial and wellbeing intervention, specifically aimed at focused intervention, designed to facilitate re-engagement with the educational process, helping students to identify their educational pathway and transition whether it is a return to their census school or a referral to a mental health school setting through the access request process.
Specific Selection Criteria
In addition to the general selection criteria, approval to teach special education and/or experience teaching students with mental health needs. Capacity to provide specialist assistance to students with additional learning and mental health support needs.
Demonstrated ability to manage a class offsite and to effectively manage complex case management of students with mental health conditions and past disengagement from school.
Demonstrated exemplary experience and success in differentiating and delivering curriculum, personalised and hybrid learning for students with a range of complex mental health needs.
Highly developed organisational, communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work as part of a collaborative team both school and network level to build positive relationships with students, census school staff, key stakeholders and external agencies.
Demonstrated capacity to work collaboratively with Student Wellbeing Support -Team Around a School and St George Hospital School leadership to contribute positively to workplace culture, the School Excellence Plan and NSW DoE initiatives and Our Plan for NSW Public Education.
General Selection Criteria
1.Demonstrated ability to lead and implement inclusive, evidence-based practices that enhance educational outcomes for students with additional learning and support needs, including those with disability, complex health and mental health challenges.
2. Strong knowledge and application of disability legislation, relevant NSW Department of Education policies, and inclusive educational frameworks across a range of settings and at different stages of learning, with a proven ability to deliver professional learning and upskill learning support teams.
3.



Proven experience in managing and supporting students with disability, behavioural, and health challenges in varied settings, including hospital schools, through personalised planning and collaborative case management.
4. Capacity to lead, collaborate with, and build the capability of staff and school communities, fostering a consultative and student-centred approach that engages parents, carers, health teams, and medical professionals effectively.
5. Expertise in facilitating equitable curriculum access, adjusted education al programs, and personalised learning plans that respond to individual student needs, especially supporting online learning for students in Years 7 to 10, alongside a demonstrated commitment to advancing Aboriginal Education Policy and fostering partnerships consistent with the NSW AECG Partnership Agreement.
Conditions
An unconditional full approval to teach is a requirement. If you do not hold a full approval to teach with the NSW Department of Education, you are required to commence the application process at the same time as you apply for this teaching opportunity.
It is a requirement for all staff who work at St George Hospital School and Outreach Class and NSW Department of Education Hospital Schools to participate in the NSW Sydney Local Health District Screening & Vaccination Assessment and the annual Seasonal Influenza Vaccination Program.
