About the Museum of Chinese Australian History

Established 1985, in a beautiful heritage building in the heart of Melbourne's Chinatown the Chinese Museum's five floors showcase the heritage and culture of Australia's Chinese community. It creates exhibitions that travel interstate and overseas.

The Museum's mission is to preserve and present Chinese culture and Australian history, to recognize and celebrate the identity of Chinese Australian people within an Australian multicultural society.

The Museum's visitation is made up of interstate and international tourists, local visitors and school children, international exhibition visitors with over 25,000 school children engaged in our school programs each year.

The Museum's activities include exhibitions and events, education programs for Australian school students and community advocacy programs.

In this role, you will join a small and committed management team who are passionate about inspiring cross-cultural connectedness and understanding.

About the role

The Museum's education program delivers primarily to Australian school students at all levels and across various subject areas. Its modules include excursions (museum tours and workshops) and incursions (cultural workshops and travelling museum to regional areas).

The Education Manager is responsible for the ongoing development and delivery of the total Education program, ensuring that all modules have strong links to Australian and Victorian Curriculum,



are aligned with the Museum's purpose and strategic plan and are delivered to a high standard.

The Education Manager is directly responsible for coaching, supervision and administration of the education team, comprising of an Education Bookings Officer, and approx. 10-20 casual Tour Guides.

The role works closely with the marketing department on marketing of the program to schools/teachers and also with the CEO on product innovation and potential sources of funding e.g. government funding.

The Education Manager is responsible for maintaining and successfully acquittal of government grants and sponsorships.

The position also takes on the role of Child Safety Officer within the organisation.

Key Selection Criteria

Skills Required

- Demonstrated understanding of teaching and learning principles within a learning institution, museum, tourism or cultural attraction environment
- Knowledge of the Victorian and/or Australian curriculum in one or more of the following areas: Australian history, immigration and multiculturalism, literature, language and philosophy, ancient Chinese history, drama, dance, music, martial arts
- Professional development skills to train tour guides and educators




- Experience working with a LMS system or similar digital learning environment
- Experience developing marketing and communications to schools and teachers
- Outstanding written and verbal communication skills
- Robust leadership skills to lead a small team

Experience Required

- Minimum 2 years' experience in the education sector developing and delivering educational experiences for Australian school students
- Awareness of current trends and best practices in museum education programs
- Demonstrated people management experience
- University Degree in Education, Teaching, Museum Studies, or similar
- Experience in either the Arts, Tourism, Community or Not for Profit sectors is preferred
- An ability to speak Chinese language as a second language is an asset but not a necessary attribute.
- A people person who will prioritise communication and team work
- A strong collaborator, happy to partner with other departments to develop best in class solutions
- Highly organised and methodical approach to completing assignments
- Keen to learn and develop on the job

This is a part-time position, 3 days per week including Thursdays to align with staff meetings and other staff rosters.

The advertised salary is for22.8 hours per week.

This is equivalent to $79,040 x 0.6EFT plus 12% superannuation.
